One of the leafs in the leaf spring. Ive heard that if you take off one of the helper springs you can get a 2 inch drop. Is this true and how is the ride?

Doubt very much that you would get 2" out of that, besides, you'll kill you load capacity. It may well ride nicer, though, as the stock ride is a bit stiff with no load.
If you plan on carrying more that groceries just go with blocks or shackles, you'll thank yourself in the end.

Not carrying anything more the groceries, and the better ride would be nice. My buddy did it in a Shelby dakota back in the day and it worked fine. Im mostly going to be drag racing and dont want to use blocks or other means of lowering. Ive heard shackles can be a pain and blocks arent good for racing. And they say all the lowering leafs ride bad. Also ther a pain to install traction devices on like cal tracs and so forth.

be careful removing springs. i know a guy who did it to a 98 and ended up snapping the leafs he left. i could be wrong, but i believe he just removed the helper.

If you are going to be racing it, removing a spring will only amplify the traction problem by increasing axle wrap/wheel hop.

00r/tcc is right...the axle wrap would be too much...you said itd be a pain to install traction bars on a aftermarket leaf? it would be the samething as installing them on your stock leafs. and the hotchkis rear springs are are good, a little more stiff than you stock ride but youre drag racing. spend a little money and make it safe. why chance it.
