Subject: Toe?/camber? gets worse in reverse
IP: Logged

Message:
Hey guys just wondering what the deal is with my truck that when I drive in reverse the toe or camber gets worse! Not sure which one it is. The tops of the tires tilt inwards a lot more when i go in reverse than when I go forward and get out and look at it.

What is the deal with this?

thanks

By the way i have 2 inch WC drop arms with fairly new ball joints.

This is normal. I have witnessed this on every truck I have ever driven.

when the top of the tire is tilted in its called negitive camber when the front of the tire is tilted in its called to in or positive toe and if you havent you should get an alinment since you changed control arms those happen to mess with your camber alot

Yeah the control arm itself is responsible for camber. By loosening the two nuts on the top you can adjust it to anything you want to. But assuming you had it aligned in the first place, When you pull forward and put it in park is the time you want to check it. Take any truck and put it in reverse and it will get negative camber.

They are huge, like 7/8 or more, two, equal space aprt right over the coil pocket cutting across the control arm. They are very easy to see on my 94. This adjusts the camber and the bolt and nut will slide like a whole inch either way when loosen but a little bit makes a big difference. You can check with a level, then change and then stick a level back up to the wheel so see how "straight" its standing up. You have to jack that corner up and get most of the weight off it, then loosen it and then grab the bottom of the tire and pull or push it depending on which way you want to go. The toe is measured by picking a specific spot across the front tread of your tire and the same spot of the backside tread and seeing the difference. If the difference in the back is more you are toed in and the outside of your tires will wear more, and if your toed out (more measurement on the frontside, I always like to think 'legs spread' / \ ....like that and the inside of the tread will wear more but you also have to take into consideration the camber. If you have negative camber the inside will wear more and you have positive camber you will wear outside more. Most vehicles come from factory with a touch negative camber and a touch of toe in (holds on the road better and doesn't dart around). YOu can adjust toe but loosen the nuts on the tierods and then twisting them out or in to move your toe out or in. I had to completely align mine after bagging and I've got 1k miles on my 20's and no significant wear. I mean they ain't lasting like my 16's were before but the wear rating on the 20's is 320 compared to 400 on the 16's. Didn't any of yall take auto vo-tech in school. Well class is out.

I'm a mix of old school (grandpa taught) and new school (TTC auto-tech school) of hard knocks. Anyway I still get schooled everyday of stuff I didn't know. However I keep mixing the new and old tricks I have learned. Keep the info rolling.

Yeah, I remember them days. I was thinking, what the hell does all that stuff do and how in the world can anyone assemble it all to perfection. Now when somebody asks me a question having to do with combustion, fuel, or air, its hard to relate to their standpoint cause its seems like the stuff has been embedded in my head so long I can't think of a life when I didn't know how all the crazy stuff goes together to make an engine.
