Subject: Weird noise when braking: HELP!
IP: Logged

Message:
I am the proud new owner of a 97 Dakota ext cab, 2wd, v6. Unfortunately the previous owner was mechanically challenged and their mechanic was not up to par. I have replaced the normal wear items and changed all of the fluids, and the combo of these actions has gotten rid of a lot of shaking/stumbling while driving, plus reduced engine noise.

HOWEVER: I have now driven the truck enough to realize there is a very 'wrong'-sounding noise coming from the front end when under firm braking. When I am moving [at 10 mph or 60 mph, it is the firm pressure that seems to do it] and I apply the brake firmly the brakes engage and then, as the truck is slowing down, I hear a moderatly loud 'clunk'/'thunk' from the front end. It sounds like it is coming from the passanger side of the front end, but I can't be sure.

I checked the brakes on the front end and there is still at least 3/8 inch of wear on either side of the rotor. I checked the wheel and reinstalled it, making sure it was centered on the rotor and the rotor was firmly pressed against the backplate. The caliper did not appear to be loose. Do any of you have any suggestions? Thanks!
