Subject: Wet Carpet, passenger side, suspect AC

I have seen this posted before, here and/or other boards, but don't recall ever seeing a fix...

'98 Dakota CC, SLT 5.2

While working in the truck I noticed the carpet on the passenger side was wet, under the rubber mats recently put in to catch the beach sand from other surfer passengers. This is Florida we still surf and use the AC daily.

When you first start the truck there is a pretty good outflow of water from the firewall area, then continuous dripping while the AC is running full. I think the evaporator is freezing up causing the problem, posted this problem and someone suggested I replace the clutch cycling switch, which we did although I don't think it fixed the problem. I suspect the freezing up of the evaporator is the source of the water..

Where does the drain exit the AC/Heater air-handler box through the firewall ? The water drips out behind a metal flap, that doesn't appear to be easily removable and I can't see a drain tube. Maybe it can be cleaned out and drain more efficiently.

Is the drain active with some sort of valve that closes when the engine is off ? Maybe a valve shuts down when the ac/engine are off causing the water to backup and overflow while the evaporator slowly defrost.

What else may cause the evaporator to freeze up ? After replacing the clutch cycling switch it does not appear the the clutch cycles off/on while running the AC.
