Subject: Fog Light Lenses WEAK
IP: Logged

Message:
I have been reading up on MANY problems with folks experiencing broken fog lights lenses.
Mine were broken 2 weeks after bringing home my Y2K Dakota.

Recently had a friend who works at Dodge to check into getting lenses and he says they are not available individually... WTF???
He says you have to buy the whole fixture @ some ridiculously high price.

He is in sales not parts, but could this be true?

Can anyone tell me where I can buy just the lenses for the OEM fog lights?

Thanx,

00dax,
when you say "get those fog lights on," do you mean mount them or turn them on?? If an '00 is the same as the '02 then turn headlights on and pull the switch out.

Don't use them except in the fog, rain, or snow....they're not for show. The moisture will keep them from heating up

I think the moisture/heat combo is what cracks them, JMO.

I bought my fog lights from wal-mart and they are made of glass. I use my foglights for show and I don't have any problems with them. I had them for the last 5 months. The great thing about them is that they are only $40 and I was told that they are manufactured from pilot lights.

I wanted some red fog lights, but the cops weren't very agreeable to the idea. If mine every crack i'll go with pilot, but so far after 10 months of constant "show" usage (at night of course), they are fine.

Living in NorthWest Oregon, I tend to run mine daily from Nov. to April, as it tends to be dark and rainy most days then. I have some hairline cracks in both, but the lights have never burned out with 28,000 on my 2001.

HI AND HAPPY HOLIDAYS TO ALL,

My Brother and I have both had our fog lights replaced under warranty by seperate dealers. If your bulb is burnt out (from the moisture getting in) then the dealer has too replace the entire unit to avoid further electrical problems - so I waited till the first bulb blew and then took the truck in, my brother brought his in before the bulbs blew.

Bottom line is with very little arguing with the service manager we were both able to convince them that the broken foglight needed to be replaced under warranty to avoid future electrical problems.

JUST FYI- The foglight is one unit -lense and all- only thing seperate is the bulb (if its broke they'll probably replace that too).

These are the lights WalMart sells for $40, and YES they are made by PILOT: CYBER WHITE NV-602W (ANYONE WITH ANY INSTALLATION TIPS FOR THESE PLEASE LET ME KNOW!)

My right one filled with water and the drivers side is the one with cracks. I replaced it with the buld that looks similar as no one carries the 898.

Well looks like I am just gonna ditch the stock fog lights altogether and go to the Pilots.

Except I JUST bought a set of 893 Superwhite bulbs. No sense putting them in a broken lenses and watching them blow in 30 days or less.

If anyone is interested I will sell them for $25 shipped.
These are the premium 5000k brightness super white fog light bulbs. Cost was $29.95/pr.

If you are interested please email me at mrty2u@hotmail.com

I found the problem was the 898/899 bulbs they place in the fog lights from the factory. They have a black (or dark grey) ceramic coating on the end of the bulb, I am guessing to cut glare to oncoming drivers. This causes the heat from the bulb to concentrate at the end, where it is nearest the housing lens. I had one split and the bulb blew. I replaced the housing and replaced both the bulbs with the 894 bulb. The 894 lacks the ceramic coating, runs cooler out at the tip, and provides 25% more candle power with the same power usage (watts) as the stock 898/899. I have not had a lense crack since the replacement.

If you live in the north where gravel is put on the roads because of snow the lenses are broken annuly. I have been told Dodge has replacement lites now with Lexan lenses which wont break.
