Just bought a new '03 2WD QC Sport Plus and love it. First time Dodge owner. Went lookin for a smaller truck that was easier on gas but ended up with a 5.9 in this! Guess I got sucked in by the big horsepower numbers, nice to have lotsa jam. Pretty harsh on gas so far, hoping it gets better. Averaging about 12mpg in city, and 17 highway. Will a bed cover make a large diff.?
What are your opinions of the 5.9? Good motor?
Anyone know why my Dak came virtually unmarked? There is one "Dakota" decal on the tailgate and that's it. Nothing on the sides. Is this unusual? All other Daks I see have "Sport" or "Dakota" all over the place. I kinda like the plain look anyway, but was just curious

Hey bro, welcome to the sight. There are lots of posts about the Daks' gas mileage, it is not great. There is not a whole lot you can do, but, use the search engine on this site, you'll have lots of feedback to research on ways to improve the gas mileage. Basically, as we say in the Seabees.."suck it up", I don't mean that to be a jerk, just if you like your Dakota, the poor gas mileage will not be all that bad of a setback. Enjoy your Dak and enjoy the site!!!
Cheers

Must be "NO CAR" then, cause Mopar doesn't manufacture automobiles. Could you come up with a more stupid quote?

There is nothing ignorant about that quote. Richard Petty said that, in the late 60's I belive. Mopar refers to all Chrysler products,
Dodge,Chrysler,Plymouth,Jeep. Now who is ignorant.
Don't get mad I'm just stating a fact.

Butz- Congrats on the new truck. Welcome. As far as Fuel milage goes, It will go up a little bit after it breaks in but not much, There are a few things you can do, but also adds power. When you add power you tend to use it, thus lowering milage unless you keep your foot out of it.LOL Quad Cabs are heavier than other Dakota's as well.
The badges were changed for 2002 and then again in 2003.

Smitty1000 - the word you got wrong was "Believe." Good try though.

"Richard Petty said that." Good god, lets send the Pope to get some info from Petty.

Mopar does not refer to all Chrysler products.

You gave it a good try Smitty1000, but you should just stick to what little you know.

What little I know, Well I Was a Tech at a Dodge dealer for a Few years, not to mention I'm ASE certified. What about you? As far as the spelling spelling well I'm a mechanic not an english teacher. Mopar DOES refer to all Chrysler products. Stop by any speed shop and ask them if you don't belive. The thing I wasn't sure about was the year. I saw the race, Speed Channel replays classic races, he said it in an interveiw.
It was the race where he burned up the restrictor plate on the hemi superbird and started laping cars like they were standing still. Very famous race, just can't rember the exact year. Shortly after that the Hemi was banned from NASCAR. So Don't tell me I don't know what I'm talking about simply because I corrected you. If you can't handle it don't open your mouth. Like I said before Don't get mad. I wasn't trying to pick a fight, so there is no need to jump on me. This is a sight for all Dakota owners, for info and to BS. Trying to pick fights over the internet is for teenage kids w/nothing better to do.

Butz,

Welcome to the club!

I don't want to start the 4.7 vs. 5.9 thing here,

But, You'd get much better MPG, and NO decrease in power or torque to your 'but dyno', if you would have went with the 4.7. By just taking off your belt fan, and adding a home brew intake, you can easily make up the 10HP difference between the 2 engines. And, the 4.7 comes in a 5spd, which also gives you more HP to the 'but dyno' and better MPG.

But, enjoy your new ride, still a great choice!

DetroitDak,

All Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep/Eagle products are MOPAR vehicles according to D/C's GM, so what the hell do you know? And Dodge does manufacture autos with a performance attitude, namely the Viper, The Neon SRT-4, and the Ram SRT-10. But those aren't really performance oriented vehicles I guess.

What the hell is your problem. Hey, great way to welcome a new person to the site. Show them how you can knitpick everyone to death. I think that everyone knows that MOPAR is Chrysler's parts line, but it is also commonly used to describe Chrysler vehicles by just about everyone (except you I guess). If you want to get that technical about it, OK how about this. Your screen name is DetroitDak. What the hell is a Dak? Does Dodge make a vehicle called a Dak? No they make a Dakota, but everyone knows what you mean when you say Dak. My point is this - just chill out. If you want someone to fight with, get married. Save your anger for the ricers that occasionally invade the site.
Anyway, Butz I have 5.2 and am currently getting about 13-14 with mostly city driving. I figure it costs me about $25/month over having a 6 cyl. To me, $25/mo is worth paying for the smile I get every time I stomp the accelerator. Enjoy your new Dakota.

I was brought up on a Dodge, Chrysler, Mopar....whatever you choose to say...family, I'll never buy anything but. I just like Dodge, and I like the quote...that is all. Maybe you are just jealous cause' I'm serving this great Country of ours and you're not...therefore, you have the right to make such a statement without fear of reprisal.
