Subject: Hemi Ram Transmission info???!!!
IP: Logged

Message:
I am considering buying a 2500 ram 4x2 instead of an R/T. I couldn't find any ram forums but I figured you guys would know. The 4 and 5 speed autos are offered...as well as the NV4500. If the engine were to potentially (eventually) put out....say...500+ HP. Will these trannys hold up? ....which is the absolute best? by this I mean strongest. Also......do you guys know any good ram forums as good as this one? Thanks.

The stock transmission will not hold up to 500 horses without modification. As far as which one would be best, I would suggest aftermarket or the 4 speed with a total rebuild.

The tranny will be just fine. The new
drive-by-wire system will prevent you from hot
rodding your truck. As you step on the gas
pedal and the back tires break loose, the
computer will back out of the throttle for you.
On the Hemi truck, your foot is not connected
to the throttle body.

Um.... if you're going for 500hp+, why not at least wait for a 1500 Hemi? (Available in about 1 month.)
Which 4 and 5 speed autos are avail? Are they just the 45RFE and 545RFE??

If he mods the motor to 500 horses aint no fly by wire gonna prevent it from getting to the tranny! That might even pose more problems. Dodge isn't known for great trannies anyways!

The transmission aren't rated by HP, the only thing they see is torque.
The only automatic is the 5 speed 545rfe, but for the Hemi applications they beefed it up over the 45rfe, I don't know what its rated at.

The manual is the nv-4500 and it's only offerend on the 2500 and 3500, and last I heard all trucks in order with that combo are on hold for some reason. I have talked to a 2500 Hemi owner with the manual and he isn't to happy about the basically wasted 1st gear in the 4500. His truck has 4.10 rear gears and with a 5.61 first gear the 375 ft-lbs of torque become 8600 ft-lbs (this compares to 3300 ft-lbs a Dakota R/T sends back in first gear). The NV-4500 HD is rated for 460 ft-lbs.

There are no Ram boards I have found as good as this one (for Dakotas), but the Ram board at www.moparchat.com is pretty close.

I agree with eggbert, www.dodgetrucks.org is one of your best bets it is easier to use than moparchat.com and has more info than dodgetalk.com.

From what I read the 545rfe is the same tranny as the 45rfe except the computer is programmed a little bit differently.
