I have a 99 5.2 4x4. Do you guys use the overdrive on short drives to town and back?....Stop lights, in town driving or just use it when on higher mileage jaunts. As you can see, I am not that acquainted with the overdrive. It seems when I am not in overdrive and get around 50mph+ that you need another gear which would be the overdrive. What about the short trips to town like 15 miles or so, I just dont want to leave it in overdrive forever cause I am afraid I might burn it up. Any words of wisdom appreciated.

Since you didn't mention shifting, I'm assuming you've got an automatic. I've also got a '99 4x4 5.2 auto. Delivered pizzas for last 15k miles or so, and simply let the tranny go into overdrive. I don't think you've got anything to worry about. The only time I lock out the o/d is in really hilly terrain or towing a heavy trailer, just to keep tranny from hunting. Just my thoughts though...

Jeffro,
Thx for the response, yes, its an automatic. So it sounds like you leave your truck in overdrive most all of the time minus your exceptions?

I don't use it much when running around town doing a lot of the stop and go at lights or from store to store and I tend to not use it running between towns where theres only 3-5 miles in between. I definately use it on my 30 miles drive to and from work each way on the interstate each day.

Izzy,
Thx for the reply, I guess you just need to remember to turn it off every time during the short rides or if you forget it appears to be no big deal. I dont really care about gas mileage cause I need to buy it anyway.
