Subject: Questions about Dakotas..

Message:
I currently have a Dodge Neon, but I am looking into getting a truck, something a little more usefull with a bigger engine . I'm sort of thinking about a 97-98ish Dakota R/T with the 5.9l V8. But I have a few questions...

1) How much could I expect to pay for a used Dakota R/T? Minimal options, no power window, doors or locks, no A/C, just bare bones, only thing that is a MUST is the 5.9l V8.

2) Is the 5.9l a good engine for towing? I heard that it isnt, I don't ever have anything HUGE to tow, just small things. If the 5.9 isnt good, whats the optimal engine?

3) How big of a variety of aftermarket performance parts is there availible? i.e. CAIs, Exhaust, headers, Super/Turbo Chargers, etc.

4) Is the insurance on Dakotas high?

Thanks for all your help!

As for the towing part, if the 360/5.9L can't tow it, then the Dak isn't the right truck for you. Thats the largest we got. There is an abundance of aftermarket parts out there for the 360 because it has been around so long and is a rather simple engine (compared to newer ones). I don't know if the R/T is the best truck for towing; you'd have to ask some R/T guys how well their trucks tow. I pay a reasonable insurance rate on a 3.9L V6, I can imagine that the insurance on any 250hp vehicle is gonna be up there!!

I'm single and have 2001 CC 4.7. No accidents or tickets, but live in a major metropolitan area, with relatively high car theft. I pay $147 a month for full coverage.

I did have State Farm insurance, but moved to Farm Bureau for a better rate. I bought a 4.7 5-speed, but when I was shoppin' around, State Farm asked, "does it have the letters 'R/T' on it?".RED FLAG! The last time I checked, Farm Bureau doesn't penalize R/T's.

I think R/T's actually have a pretty crappy tow rating. Something to do with the performance suspension. Someone correct me if i'm wrong.

I've got a '00 4.7L 5sp 2wd LSD SLT 3.92's and can tow a 20ft Aquasport with no problem in 5th gear and still get 14mpg. Pretty damn good I think. But then again i'm a flat lander down here in S. Florida.

I'm not sure on the exact specs, but the R/T is not meant for towing heavy loads. It is built with hot rodders like most of the people in the performance forum in mind. They are very fast for a stock vehicle, and I have seen some running low 14's at the track without changing a thing. Everybody I know that owns one has done alot of engine work to them and won't even try to tow anything with it. Of course they have replaced their PCMs and get some nice pinging if they do try to tow.

I believe that R/T is a package that includes 1 bad ass engine, a limited slip diff, 17" wheels with some nice rubber, a lowering kit, power mirrors, windows and locks.

If you need to bring some lumber home from Menards or something you'll do just fine. I would not recomend hauling a big trailer around with an R/T.

Any vehicle with a V-8 will be expensive to insure. A Dakota (midsize truck)with a v-8 is almost insane. In my area a dakota R/T is more expensive to insure than a mustang G/T of the same year/value.

Hope this helps
Geoff

Good God Geoff where the heck do you live!?! My Dak only costs me $115 a month to insure and thats with full coverage except rental. I'm not married, 25, and haven't had an accident or ticket since '98 when I totalled my truck before last. My insurance went down when I got my dak. I went from a '90 Cherokee POS to a '00 4.7L Dak with 0 miles on it.

I live in Racine, WI. It's immediately south of Milwaukee. I have a friend, male 21 years old that pays under a grand for his 01 GT. I pay about 150 a month. I'm 19. It's insured as a six cylinder. I haven't had the title changed to a v8 for obvious reasons.

gotta go to my next class.

I love my r/t .. i have a 2001 champ edition yzf-r1 and it tows it/trailer just fine. As for bone stock I dont think you can get it stripped down, but thats just a guess. I got my 00'Club Cab R/T with 53k miles on it for 13,200 but I had to go out of state for it. Because I live in DE even though I went out of state I didn't have to pay tax and the dealer payed the transfer fees so I think I got a killer deal. If you want a 98-99 I would say your looking at under 14,000 for sure.. just depends on the demand. I've seen 99-00's rc and cc's go for 16k+ so it's timing. I suggest auto-trader.com and cars.com .. that's how I found mine. As for insurance mine is 107.00/month with progressive. I had a 01' jeep grand cherokee before this and my insurance actually went down 30 bucks a month when I got the r/t so I don't think they nail it with a high rate at all. Good luck, if you have light towing you'll be fine .. if you dig performance and want something functional there is no better choice for the money.
