Buy a muffler made to not be as loud. I think my MBRP is pretty damn quiet. It does not have ANY poping with the cat and very little without the cat.

You are also missing your cat, that is another reason you hear a lot more noise. If you wanted something quiet and smooth, you went with some seriously wrong choices.

Take it back and switch it out for a quieter flowmaster, or hell, add one to your existing.

Get a magnaflow or a gibson. those are the quiietest. As for swapping out the muffler...good luck. Just sell it to some kid and take the loss.

Well, if he adds another muffler, it will surely be quieter. I have no idea what it would sound like though. But he could ass some sort of resonator to try and quieten it.

Hey guys,I recently researched this problem and found out the popping noise is caused by the Y pipe itself. If you have A new one fabbed at a good exhaust shop it will probably get rid of it.

Eggman, much of it has to do with the engine. Although I've been told people with true duals using X or H pipes have lessened their crackles. The sound you're producing says you have a freeflowing exhaust. I think it's pretty cool and your truck probably sounds wickedly mean as fuk. You opened up your exhaust so much, this is what you've gotten.

You should see when I occasionally run my truck's exhaust stopping at the y-pipe. Hahah, now that's fuking loud.

You didn't say which Flowmaster you bought, dewalt. I've got a 70 Series on my '01 4.7, which is 22" long and really keeps the floorboard quiet. I had a 50 series on before (16" long) and it was too loud. I still have the stock cat. on. I had a Catco converter in a 5.2 '92 after the stock cat fell apart, and it was marginally louder. The 3" pipe should definitely increase the sound level.

Flowmaster sucks. Its a noise muffler, which means it only makes noise. 1-5 HP gain, thats all.
Also, flowmaster muffler are very cheaply made. They'll rust in just one year. I suggest you go with DYNOMAX ULTRA FLOW muffler.

Persoanlly I love the sound of a stock R/T exhaust. I've had my loud exhausts in the past but now I like a nice rumble. The 95 Caddy STS exhaust is also sweet. It is quite at idle and makes a nice growl at full throttle. Then again a STS has a lot more body sound deading then a Dakota. I didn't really notice my R/Ts exhaust most of the time, but when my wife uses the truck and I'm sitting in the house, it sounds like the loudest car on our block (10 houses, pretty mellow bunch). Just a sweet mellow rumble, not enough to annoy me or the neighbors. If I do get a Hemi Ram depending on how it sounds, I'll be looking to replace the stock muffler with a Dakota R/T muffler. I understand the 2500 Hemi's are using a 3" in and out muffler like the R/T so it might be a real easy and inexpensive fit. from what I understand the Hemi also has a real nice and smooth y-pipe setup and factory exhaust manifolds that look like cast shorty headers.
