Does anyone know what it takes to hook up a
trailer brake controller to a truck that didn't
come with the trailer tow package?

It's pretty easy; I got a Tekonsha Prodigy - the best on the market - and just took my time and installed it per the directions. Just make sure that the location for the controller is level while driving; that left one place - right of the steering column, just right of my knee. At least I won't bump into it as I get in/out of the truck.
We just got back from our first Thanksgiving family camping trip - what a great time! The brakes worked well and made a huge difference in pulling our 21' Hi-Lo.
Just gotta make more power...

As Daddy-D said, it is pretty easy. I also have a Tekonsha Prodigy. Unlike other controllers, the Prodigy can be mounted at a slight angle and requires very little adjustment. It is a 4 wire hook-up: one wire to the + terminal on the battery, one wire to the - terminal on the battery, one wire to a switched brake light wire (white wire with a tan stripe down by the sterring column), and one wire to the 7-pin receptacle. If you don't already have a 7-pin receptacle, you can get a complete wiring harness and 7-pin receptacle from your Dodge dealer for about $100. This setup has a built-in relay for the trailer lights, while the kits you can get from Wal-Mart, etc. don't. I've heard from a couple of sources that the Dakota headlight switch is prone to burning out if the trailer has a lot of lights and they are run directly off of the headlight switch. Just something else to think about. Another thing you might need is a 20A resettable circuit breaker in the line running to the brakes. You can get one of these from most RV stores. If you are looking for a good price on brake controllers, try www.brakecontroller.com. Good luck.
