Subject: Worthless skid plate group?

Message:
Just a question to those of you with the skid plate group options on your dakotas. I read in another post that it's just a worthless piece. When I think of "skid plate group" I think of nice thick metal. Is it really just plastic?

not at all - its a group of metal plates that cover the front steering gear and suspension/axle, the transfer case and fuel tank (3 separate plates - 1 for each section)

very useful if you anticipate heading off the beaten path once or twice

Well, I guess you had check it out yourself. I have the 01 QC SLT w/skidplates and yes they are a composit material, NOT metal. It is possible that they did change them for 03, but not likely, DC doesn't do awhole lot of changes when they don't won't to spend money.

2003 Quad 5.9l...skid plates are metal. I checked a couple of 2002 Daks. on lot and they were composite. DC must have changed for 2003 back to metal.

You'd think that DC would push their "upgraded" skid plates more if they really did change them all from composite to metal. I'll talk to the dealer when I order and if I can get metal, I'll get it, otherwise I'm gonna just say the heck with that. Thanks guys!

My '99 has all metal plates. The stupid fasteners for skid plate were those funky clip/thread fastners (don't know technical term). They broke when removed for t-case oil change, so replaced with grade 8 nuts and bolts.

On my '01, the forward plates are composite and the one over the gas tank is steel (corrogated-really strong). I've looked into aftermarket plates and there is a place out here is South Cal (Escondido to be exact) called Xtreme Fabrications that will make them custom for you.

If Dweishaar would chime in, I think this may be the guy that made his front plate. He's made plates for my buddies Pathfinder and they came out awesome. I'm just saving up some bucks before I make an appt. with him.

Not so Worthless skid plate group?

Aren't composites good for people who don't go offroad that often? I don't, and I'm happy I don't have the weight of steel plates. Plus I've read (in the Offroad forum) that the composites might be better (again, for guys like me who don't go offroad a lot) because if you prang them they've got more "give" than steel does and they'll spring back. Steel will just bend and dent.

Just another two bits...

When I ordered my truck I didn't get the skid plate group; I'm glad I didn't because I think they were still doing the composite material. Now I went to the dealer a few weeks back and asked about ordering skids. I asked him what they are making them out of now, and he said they are indeed back to metal. However, I haven't gotten mine yet to see just how good they are.

With the plastis plates you also loose approx. 4-1/2" to 6" of ground clearance pending on the spot measured, I put mine under the house.

since i've been asked to chime in...here goes...
my fab guy is actually up in Fallbrook, and he has a waiting list of 3-4 weeks. (sorry Doc, can't give up all my secrets) but as for the "well i only off-road ______ times a year" in my experience it only takes one outing or unseen rock to turn a fun outing to a very bad day. paying the extra 100.00-200.00 bucks is the difference of having a cool dent to show your friends on monday and showing your frinds your cool 1980 civic ex loaner while your dak is hung up in the shop getting a new transfer case or fuel tank. The reason you get this stuff is so you don't have to pay later. Go big or go home. IMHO
