I traded my full time 4wd Grand Cherokee in to get the R/T so I realize the benifit of a quality 4x4. I did use to go a lot higher into the mountains in the winter in search of game (it seldom worked as why in the heck would a deer want to drag itself through 3 feet of snow?) I do remember really pushing it up some really fresh, really deep snow, going up a long steep mountain road to an old ghost towm. It was pretty eerie and I wish I had chains to go along with the 4x4 as it would just spin and slide sideways often. Persoanlly I feel with the heavy duty chains, posi, studded snows, and 500 pounds of sand I have in the Dakota it could have also gotten up that road that day. Chains are just freaking amazing in snow and ice. Then again the Jeep was always in that 'extream' mode, even my wife could go from season to season, snow, to sun, and never think of even having to shift the thing into 4wd as it had the quadratrack II and fairly agressive tires. Now when the ground isn't frozen then the chains on a 2wd really won't help, in the mud you got to have a 4x4, and even then the good stuff you better have real mud tires and front and rear lockers (one reason that new Rubicon seems like such a good deal, I bet that thing will go anywhere a Hummer will go and more, for less then 1/2 the price!) So get the 4x4 if you want to, It can be fun and makes life easy, but then again the other 8 months of the year it sure is nice the have the amazing, handling and tire smoking fun of the R/T. After autocrossing my stock R/T this summer I assure you the R/T will out handle any other stock pickup ever made, even the likes of the awd syclone when the conditions are good.

Hmmmmm, I think it would be fun to demonstrate the difference in handing between 2wd and awd on dry or wet roads(by the way it is 8 months per year of challenging weather in the Pacific NW). But then it is the rain, snow and ice conditions that I want the comfort of extra capability. I think if I wanted to autocross I might use a slightly modified '66 Chevelle with a 327ci/275hp and a close ratio Muncie 4 spd.......... JP
