I'm a new owner of a 01 Quad Cab and have been reading through a lot of your entries on this site. This is a really good source for info.

I picked up my Dakota and it drives great. But, I've found some real flaws in the paint job. It's silver and there are several spots where it almost looks like it's dirty under the paint (dull with black color in it). I also have a few scratches that look the same. Black faint scratches with paint over them. Has anyone else experienced this? I'm meeting with my Dealer's Service Manager tonight to check it out.

Those of you picking up new Dakotas make sure to spend some time checking out your purchase before you walk away. We need to hold DC and their dealers accountable for delivering a quality product.

Bill,
I have had my new special ordered DAK QC two weeks. The dealer said it will be back tonight from the paint shop.
They had to paint one side of the truck.
I had bubbled paint in one area as well as black over spray from the wheel well paint. You can bet, if the paint looks like s$%t, I will be very pissed. How can DC make such a great truck and not take pride in the appearance (paint)?
You have to insist that your dealer take care of these problems and make sure that they do an acceptable job. Also, check for the the hood insulation and hood light. You should have this if you got an SLT, otherwise it is an option. From what the dealer has said so far, I have a feeling they are going to give me a line of s$%t on this one too. If this your case also, show them the SLT decor line in the back of the 2001 DAK brochure. It states that the hood insulation is included in the SLT decor option. Ask them what will happen to the hood paint without it and if they will warranty the hood paint for life as the engine heat will have an affect.

If I sound pissed, I am. I've spent alot of quality cabbage on this baby. I feel I should get a quality truck in return.

Good luck,
Roger

I know what you're saying Roger. I don't just go out and buy one of these every other day so I expect a quality product as well.

I'm afraid I'll have to have some paint work done and I don't feel the durability of the new paint will be as good as a factory paint job.

Hope it turns out good for you.

I did pick up my new QC last week on an overcast day. A few days later we had a clear, sunny day -a great opportunity to wash and inspect. What I discovered were numerous scratches in the clear coat. Next week I have an appointment with dealer to attempt to 'buff' these scratches out. Sure trust it fixes the problem. Otherwise, the patriot blue paint is beautiful (but sparse under the hood and elsewhere).

I have a 2001 quad cab in black. It is a awsome truck, but I am really unhappy about the paint hardness. Other than renting out the local hospital operating room for washing, I am going nuts trying to figure out how to keep from scratching the finish. The finish has no abrasive resistance at all. My chevy truck has a finish like porcelain. You can't damage it. I am really disappointed. Any suggestions, experiences with soft paint/clearcoat. I am REALLY careful when I wash. I just have one conclusion, and that is the paint is too soft.

I picked up my 01 CC in October 2000, As with you guys my paint has "blush" in it. The hood particularly has a venesion blind effect. I dare not give it to my dealer to fix (they will only send it out to a "cheapy" body shop to correct) If I ever tried to pass off a paint job like the one on my truck to one of my customers, I would be hunge. I'll just wait for my cowl
hood. : )

You'll never get perfect paint with such a mass produced item. I had a problem on my '98 that looked like air got mixed in with the spray. Luckily it was on the bottom rocker panel. The dealer tried fixin it and Holy Crap was that the worst paint job i had ever seen. There are no words to describe how bad it looked. I heard from a sales guy once that if you took it to a body shop and had them do it that you should get reimbursed. Never tried

My 2 week old Black QC Sport has a few minor blemishes- what looks to sand in a couple spots and what looks like a run coming from the drivers side door handle. It was an over cast and drizzle kinda day for me too but I let the dealer know I would be back with any problems. They warned against messing with factory paint ( go figure - dealer ! ) but an some Ford dealership body shop guys said the same thing. They spots are too minor to mess with but the Service manager said they would pay what ever it cost and have it done by ANYONE I wanted. That was interesting, probably because I haven't filled out thier 5 Star survey. This is getting long but my dealership was cool about it.

I too had paint problem with my Quad Cab. There were paint drips and a thin area on the back drivers side door.

The dealership was nice enough. They had it repainted and gave me a rental car for time my truck was out, but I was less than impressed by the condition of the repaint.

About every other time, I go in for service I make sure that they make note of my complaints about the paint. That way it is on file and my records show I had paint problems. If the paint starts to give me problems after I am out of warranty, they are still suppose to take care it. I was told that by both Dealership mechanic and long time salesperson both from different dealerships.

Anyone else here that? Or the opposite??

I also have a 2001 QC and I have specks that look like sand in my paint as well. They are randomly placed. My dealership was realy good about fixing the scratch in the hood. They send all of their warranty work to the best body shop in my city. The owner of the body shop was impressed that I was able to see the scratch. I have a friend that works at this shop doing gradhic design work. They wheeled the hood and one spot on the box side and then waxed the whole truck.

the place. So I had the bumper and the two
driver side doors repainted. It came back with
scratches in it AGAIN on the side they painted
and the bumper has a smunge in it like the
body shop didnt let it dry yet. The bottom of the
doors are also screwed up a little. The body
shop they use SUCKS. When I got it back I
had screws on the floor and some inside
molding broken. I could write a book on the
shit I went through so far. STILL MORE TO

My, how you guys got me worried...I would think all of you hated Dakotas to judge by this site. After doing all my research and deciding that the Dakota not only looked better than any truck on the market but was also the only one that offered everything I wanted in a truck I special ordered a crew cab 4.7 v8 w/ manual, limited slip dif., four wheel abs and all the options and packages except tow and the overhead computer. Oh yeah..I didn,t get the imobilizer either. Then I discover this site and it starts to look like I have made a major mistake. Happily I have picked up my new truck and after going over ever inch of the paint...it,s flawless. It,s uniform in color. It,s completely smooth and has no scratches. Also the other problems mentioned in this site such as the misaligned bed and fluid levels being incorrect are not present. Now if I avoid the warped brake disks and drums that others have experienced then I will have the best truck I have ever had. This, by the way is a 2002 model. I have noticed a trend in other sites for Dakota quality ratings to have progressivly improved over the past five years. Perhaps I am the latest recipient of their improving quality. I certainly hope so. My last truck was a Toyota 4x4 extra cab sold with 140,000 miles on it and compression barely lowered from when I first bought it. I would have it still but my daughter needed room in the back and a friend of mine insisted that he buy it from me. The last thing I might say is CarsDirect saved me several thousand over what I found on the lots without haggleing for it. May all of you have as good times with your trucks.

My paint job is great (except for the front bumper, it sucks). For a 1997 BLACK (yikes) truck that has to live outside, on the street, it is beautiful when I wax it. Which I did last night. And.. I waxed the roof (okay, i'm anal). It almost seems like there is a dry film on the roof that I couldn't seem to get rid of. Is it the paint? I used good Meguiar's cleaning wax.

I have a 01 SLT+ QC 4.7L White/Silver I also had paint problems. Upon first wash I found a big run in my clear coat on the drivers rear lower corner of the silver and also a hair/fiber inbeded in the drivers lower door. Also something for you guys to look at is your door jams and lower parts on the inside of your doors. Mine look like they put all the guts in the door with the paint still wet on the bottom. It is all smeared in spots. The dealer had a body shop try to match and redo the outer problems, I am getting ready to take it back again for round two cause it didn't match at all. Good luck with yours,

I have a black 2000 QC sport. The paint and clear coat suck with such definitive simplicity. I talked to the service manager about it. I told him, "I realize it's not a BMW 5 series but I still paid a ton of money for it...", he then interrupted me with, "It shouldn't matter whether it's a BMW or a Dodge, you should expect the same quality." He then told me he'd look into it and give me a call back. It has been 2 months. Thanks Scott Wolf!!! As for your service and honesty, I've never seen its equal.:) At Bellevue Dodge that is.

Well I have a problem with my paint. I have pin size rust spots all over my paint. I am told by service manager that it is fall out. Maybe I would accept this but I have owned white vehicles. I have lived in my same state for my lifetime. Lived in the same house for 12 years. Had a '72 chevy, '88 chevy, '94 ram, '96 WHITE altima, '00 white dak. The only time I have seen this is on my 88 chev. Chev repainted the whole thing without question. A couple of weeks ago I had the dealer take the solution and clay to it. Still there. My wife has a 96 altima white no rust spots on it. Hmm still fall out. I don't think so. Nobody will answer my calls. Hmmm. I don't even think they did anything. I am not a happy camper.

I'm pretty sure if you had a $130,000 mercedes with flaws in its paint, they'd be fixing it right away while sucking your c$#k. THAT'S the difference between mercedes and dodge. Point being that I would have no problems with the flaws in my paint if they'd just take care of them. The truck was pretty new when I had these issues and the dealer said their shouldn't be a difference between a dodge dealer and a bmw dealer.
With that, the paint still blows.

Good luck to all with paint problems.

hey Dak..

You probably need to have those scratches "buffed" down through the clearcoat... Just waxing it is not enough, you are gonna have to try to get down into the paint some to bring out the color...

I would suggest taking it to a professional detailer and having them buff those scratches out for you.

Interesting thread here. Lots seems to have problems! I am currently starting the process of having the paint flaws on my 2000 Amber Fire CC R/T looked at. The bed has "tiger" stripes in it, meaning darker areas in the metallic that look like stripes, the tailgate has a dark patch in it and the club cab portion has "brush" marks in it with what looks like black thread or something in it and there are a couple other panels with black junk in it. ONly the doors and roof are fine. I noticed these after a few months of ownership but wasn't sure if the dealer would fix them and was untrusting that they would do a good job and would be as durable as the factory finish. So I'm 99% done my warranty and the service manager says his zone rep is going to give me severe grief about the mileage and why I didn't say something sooner. I am ready for a fight as I take immaculate care of the paint (wash at least one a week and 26 coats of Zaino). Also, 60K kms warranty means 0-60k Kms and I don't care if I'm at 59100, I'm still covered dammit!

Oh, I had a black 99 R/T before this one and the paint was quite good except for the orange peel. There is a whole process to try and prevent swirl and scratches of which I'd be happy to talk about some time later :O)

I also had a black 97 Avenger ES with BEAUTIFUL black paint. That shows the differences between manufacturing plants......

I just talked to the service manager at Hinkley dodge on the phone. He said all cars after 88 have this fall out problem. This is when paint changed to a non lead base paint on vehicles. This is a softer paint than used previous. So the paint get little metal fragments in it. He would provide a dc document that states so. I said send it. I then asked why then I do not see this in my bros 94 white f250, why do I not see this in my bros 92 white olds cutless, why do I not see it in my wifes 96 white altima. He said he does not know. Personally I think it is crap and am very angry. So this should be in any color of vehicle. Look at your non dodge vehicles and see if you see little rust spots.

Those pesky rust spots could actually be rail dust that settled into the fresh paint after initial transport from the manf. plant. Try using a clay bar system on them, such as the Mothers Gold Bar. Lots of folks that have had this happen get them off with the clay bar.

The "rust spots" are not really rust as it is on the surface of the clearcoat. Rust normally starts from behind the body panel and comes through unless the panel surface is damaged or chipped exposing bare metal to the elements. Using a high speed polisher will take these spots right off, and depending on where you live they will come back again eventually.
