Well, free mods are fun to do with the best overall cost. The problem is, they don't really yeild too high of a gain. We can start with some easy ones.
1. Remove the air silencer from the airbox. Start by removing the accordian looking hose that runs from your throttle body hat to the upper air cleaner box. Then, unclip the upper box and remove it. Loosen and remove all of the bolts holding on the lower box and remove it from the truck. You'll see the silencer. It's the part that stuck into the fender. Remove that piece from the airbox. Its a tight fit sometimes, but it will come off. Put the airbox back on and put everything back together, minus the silencer. This won't give you much, especially without the next mod.
2. Not sure if your truck will even have it, but with your hood popped, there should be a rubber flap that goes between the radiator and the front fender support. It is attached with the "Christmas tree" retainers. They should just pull off. This, in combination with the last mod, will give you a better throttle feeling. Not sure of any real numbers, but if feels stronger. Might be louder too. Your sucking in cooler air at speed now, so thats good. Wouldn't worry about water. You shouldn't get any up into the air filter, let alone into the intake. I'll post another few suggestions in a following post.

Another free mod you might want to try is the KRC timing advance trick:KRC Timing Advance Mod

I would suggest first going to a 180 degree thermostat and swapping out the stock plugs for a set of Autolite 3923's before you try it.

I did it on my truck ('99 CC 5.2 Auto w/3.55s), and noticed an immediate improvement in responsiveness. I can barely give the truck throttle from a standing start, even in "normal" driving!

Ok, the easy stuff is done. Go no farther if you don't have proper tools or if you don't have good mechanical skills. For the next mod (not quite free, but almost) you'll need some parts and tools. You'll need a T-15 (I think) Torx bit, a DIGITAL volt/ohm meter, and a couple washers from the hardware store. I'm not sure what size the washer will be for your truck, but they need to be big in outer diameter, but the inner hole needs to be pretty small. Well, rather than post the whole instructions, I'm going to send you over to a website that has the instructions, along with a couple of other suggestions. Here's the link.http://www.speedtweaks.net/Tips_Tricks.htm#TPS_Mod
try that first, then move on to relocating your IAT sensor. It's at this link.

Try those, Don't mess up. Just kidding. If you have basic automotive skills, these should be a breeze for you. If not, find a friend who does, give him/her a case of beer and let them do the mods. If your in south eastern MI, I'd be glad to do the mods for you. Just shoot me an email if you have any more questions. I'll help you to the best of my ability. Good luck.

Pull the clutch fan, and for $8 more get a short belt to bypass A/C and power steering (probably a race only mod unless you go Popeye forarms.) You can get a free cat-back by just dropping the entire exhause behind the cat, and that also drops probably 50 pounds. You can pull off the spair, jack, tailgate, and rear bumper for a couple hundred more. These mods could be good for a .5 sec in the 1/4 that's equivilent to 50 hp for $8!
