Hey all need your help once again. My light came on the other day, and I checked for the codes, and I got a
P0455 A large leak has been detected in the evaporative system! Does this mean an A/C problem?? Funny cuz if it is I haven't used the air in over a month, been around 40 degrees here. Any help, or starting points to further isolate, would be greatly appreciated.

DakotaDan, you rock!! I would much prefer to buy a new cap, verses anytpye of A/C componet. I guess I may have sounded like a dumb a$s, but the evaporator word got me in the A/C direction. I will check it out, and replace if necessary. I know I close cap complely, hell I get 10+gal everyday. Thanks again, and hopefully I can return the favor sometime.

Replace the cap!
I had the same problem, took the cap apart and found it all corroded inside.
Got a new cap, reset the computer, and all is back to normal.

Thanks alot for this information...
I had the same problem and started to replace to O2 sensor and look for exhaust leaks..I never in my life heard of a engine code for a loose Gas Cap. The ironic thing was that I went through 1/4 of a tank of gas in 30 miles because of this... I am not used to working on Dodge's so thanks alot... If anyone wants to look at my normal projects check out my site www.55chevy.2ya.com..

Thanks again for all the help

Apologize for interruption but thought you could help me.

Need info, links on how-to do a scan of codes on a 1994 - 5.2L Dakota 4x4.
Just failed the CA smog test..have only 1 retest left.

NOX failed @ 916ppm (491max) for 15 mph and did passed for 25mph @593ppm (744max)
HC just barely failed for 15mph @ 86ppm (85 max). HC passed 25mph.
CO passed both 15/25mph.

I replaced cap / rotor and O2 sensor just before test. Now I will replace EGR valve and S-plugs. Engine has 131K miles, original owner, light usage. Engine sounds crisp and accelerate up tall hills very well!

Are OBD-II scanners expensive? or worthwhile? Any recommendations?
Where is the port on the '94 5.2L? Would like to get codes cleared before re-test.

I think the tech didn't warm up the engine enough before testing. (Truck sat long enough to cool down before test) Is this common?

Also, did you know that in 2000 the max limits for NOx were 1/3 what they are today?
What a PITA!

Thanks for any advice.

Ron

You can scan for possible codes through the ignition... You have OBD-I... If you don't have a check eng light, you most likely aren't throwing any codes. You can check it with the engine off-- turn key to ON, then ACC, then ON, then ACC, then to ON once again and wait until all dash lights go out-- the check eng. light will flash... count the flashes.. 1 2 3 4 5 pause 1 2 3 4 5 is the end of test (that's a 5 pause then 5 = 55 code). If you recently disconnected your battery, you're first code would be a 1 pause 1 2 (code 12--) and will clear after 19 drive cycles.

If you get a bunch of codes-- you can input them to the code -decoder on www.dakota-trucks.net (DML)

You have an EGR intake-- there's a possibility that your EGR passages are plugged-- you can remove the egr tube, spray a bunch of B-12 in there-- use a coat hanger, break all that crap loose-- then suck it out with a shop vac. Make sure you are running the stock 195 F t-stat, stock PCM, good gas, plugs, wires, and make sure the truck is HOT HOT... Go drive it like you stole it before you bring it in... trying to not have it sit at idle for a long period of time. YOU COULD also have a leaking belly pan gasket-- that could throw things off too.

scan tools have come down in price last few year
you can buy basic tool from AutoXray.com and JCwhitney. i have also seen scan tools in local auto parts store for about $200-$300 depending on model(try PEP boys)i have autoxray works pretty well for a basic unit and displays DTC in english not code numbers OBD2 connectors are under dash on drivers side

good luck

Thanks to All,

Sam, I guess you're right about it being OBD-I. Great, I don't need to spend a bunch more $$. Are the codes all 2 digit and are the light pulses of the 2 digit codes seperated by anything? like a long wait or a single blip?

The EGR assembly is between the firewall and TB & right next to distributor. Mounts to top of manifold casting machined bosses with 2 bolts, 1 vac line and a harness connection, easy in or out. Where do the passages go to or terminate? Is the test to put vacuum on the EGR valve and see if the idle goes rough, turn off the vacuum and idle returns to normal? Or is there a better test of the EGR operation?

I noticed the bolts on the EGR were loose as well as the S-plugs. One plug, #8 was hard to remove, like it was cross-threads. Looked at the threads on the plug, looked normal. Blew out the empty s-plug port, sprayed wd-40 in it, new plug went in okay. just wonder what caused the old plug to be difficult?

You mention a leaky oil pan gasket may cause a problem. It does have a small oil leak. Can't tell if it's the oil pan or T/C cover. Oil is on the driver side drive axle boot, back plate and area around it. What Sensor detects a leaky pan gasket? (I heard of a leaky gascap or tank with pin hole causing the check engine light to come on.

Btw, the www.dakota-trucks.net site is inoperative?

Thanks for the advice,
Ron

ps I checked your site & I'll be back!!

Funny thing - I got this code last night. Removed and tightened the gas cap when I left for work this morning. Went to lunch - no service light!

Thanks to this forum I saved myself a big headache and probably some money (it's not the first time DD.com has come to the rescue). I had the 0432 code a few months back and, thanks to the site, went and bought a $10 gas cap at Autozone - fixed the problem.

Thanks to everyone for all their contributions to the site.

hey guys this code p0455 has got my head spinning trying to figure out the source of the leak. Ive replaced the gas cap, checked the connections on the charcoal canister, and the light is still on. my gas cap was really corroded with rust on the inside but i think my fill tube is rusted through. has anyone else had to replace the tube? and shouldnt the check engine light go out when the problem is corrected or do i have to reset the computer? thanks for the help.

I changed fuel tank cap - Check Engine light was OFF for couple days but then ON again.
Mechanic sended me to junk yard to get another "charcoal Canister".
When I start change it - I found that hose to this canister was damaged so I just cut it 1 inch shorter and then reset engine light.
no problem now.

so try to check hoses under car to "charcoal Canister" or leak can be in "charcoal Canister"....
