Message: I have the exact same truck and and 8 1/2 month old girl. Both of our baby seats rest on the console slightly. I found that to put the child seat in the rear you have to actually wedge the baby seat between both front seats to make the seat fit. We found that attaching the child seat in the back is not very stable with just a lap belt.
To solve this problem we attach the car seat in the passenger front with the passenger airbag turned off. This set-up is far more stable than to place the child seat in the back. My wife has to sit in the middle of the back seat. This is what we have been doing for the past five months with zero problems.
If anyone has any better advice other than buying a durango or quad cab let me know.

Message: The console comes out pretty easy, maybe just take it out until you can face your baby forward. Still a huge PITA if you ask me. Minivans may not be cool but it's what almost all the parents in my family use. Rear sliding doors, it's like a dream come true! Don't feel bad I convinced my wife we could buy a 2 seat RC Dakota R/T for out family of 3 seeing as how we have the van, now we are running into vacation problems as the van is not the ideal tow rig for our camper (and espically the bigger one we want to buy), and the Dakota is seat challenged. Thinking back we did have a RC 93 Dakota with buckets when my daughter was just a baby, we took the console out all together and put in a center seatbelt and belted the seat directly on the floor. It worked but it really was hard on the elbow for both of us!

Message: a friendly GSP officer notified me that what you are doing, avdak, isn't legal. It really didn't make much sense to me, and the officer didnt give me a ticket or anything (he said that he understood why I was doing it the way I was).
The fact is that, at least in Ga., your child MUST ride in a rear facing seat. If your vehicle has a back seat with a seatbelt, the child must ride IN THE BACK. I do know that the Ga legislature is trying to add a small pickup w/extened cab exemption clause, but as of yet its not there. In my opinion, I'm gonna do whatever is best for the child, but me and countless knee-jerks seem to disagree what that is.

Message: Nate
I live in California and the D.M.V. suggests placing the car seat in the rear of the vehicle however it isn't a requirement. I like the idea of taking the center console out. My only problem is that the rear bench seat is very narrow and my car seat base hangs over the edge about three inches. To me it isn't as stable as the front passenger seat with the air bag turned off.

Message: Screw all that. Just put the rear-facing seat directly behind the passenger seat with the passenger seat moved up enough to accomodate the seat. Then recline the passenger seat enough to put pressure on the baby seat, thus aiding in securing the baby seat even more.
This will also allow you(the driver) to occassionally(preferrably when stopped) glance back to check on the child whereas if the baby seat was in the middle...checking on said baby would be impossible.
