Subject: Get a 5.9L, WOOOHOOO

Message:
I just bought a 5.9L out of a 1995 automatic Ram. First question is, am I going to have to drill out a place for the pilot bearing or is it there already and I just need to buy one?

Second question, I am going from 3.9L to 5.9L, I know the transmission won't hold, but is it the gears that would survive the 5.9L hp or is the casing week also?

Will the bellhousing be the same for the 3.9 and 5.9 engines?

OK, that's it for now, I am sure I will have a bunch more questions later.

Thanks
Dan

the 3.9 dak uses AX-15 5 speed
the 3.9 and 5.2 dak/ram use the NV3500 med duty 5 speed
the 5.9 and 8.0 use the NV4500 hvy duty 5 speed

but the 3.9,5.2,5.9 all use a 11" clutch execpt dak 3.9 uses 10.4"

The 5.2 and 5.9 have the same bolt pattern, more than likely you have the AX-15 but you should check because you could get by on the NV3500 untill you decided to get the 4500 or if you got the AX-15 you could probly find a 4500 in a junk yard or something. hope thats usefull 4 ya

The nv-4500 is not going to fit under the floor pan of a Dakota. That is why there are no 360/5-speed Dakota's from the factory. The nv-3500 might live if you don't use slicks and get a better clutch. Hell it might live if you do get slicks and try those 3500 rpm launches but the odds are not on you side!

What is it about the transmission that won't hold up? Will the casing break or is it just that the gears are just not made strong enough to hold the power? The engine is not going to be stock so there is going to be more power then your probably assuming. So is it the gears or the casing that won't last?
