Hi All,
I just wanted to pass along an experience I had today. I have a '00 CC, SLT, 4.7, 3.55 LSD( bought it new) and only have a couple of mods.
So I drive into this state inspection station, this "technician" drives the Dak into the bay, shuts the engine off, hooks up his computor to the trucks computor and the inspection computor begins it's thing. No big deal so far.
The "tech" watches the shop's monitor a few minutes, checks the gas cap for vacuum leaks, then disconnects everything and writes out my bill.
I was thinking he wasn't through yet, but I was very wrong.
He accompanied me to the office, I paid him the $40 and he handed me the "inspection report", and I get in my truck and leave, still wondering what happened to the inspection I paid for!
He never raised the hood, didn't inspect the wipers, tires, lights or the damn brakes.
When I arrive home, I get a cup of coffee and sit down to read this "inspection report".
But I notice the computor read out says I have a 5.2 LOL!!!!!!
I am returning to shop today to see if he entered the 5.2 or did the truck's computor download that info!!! Still funny as hell to me!!!!

You may need 2 inspections. That may of only been the smog inspection. In Missouri you need the smog and safety inspection. 2 different places to go, (or they have a driveby which, somehow, can determine if you're polluting) better check your laws.

In CT there is no safety inspection right now. But they are rearranging the system... So this is probably true.

State inspections are, for the most part, a joke and a way to line the state's coffers with YOUR money.
IN PA, I bought three brand spanking new vehicles and lo and behold before I could drive them off the lot, they had to be inspected. Inspected for what I asked? Well, thats PENNDOT regs, and we HAVE to do it I am told.
years ago, Indiana had a similar "scam" I know it was a joke even as a child because we had an old junky chevy farm truck with rickety wiring and not e brake yet it "passed" each and every year. Heck, the guy we took the truck to would sell you a sticker and not even look at the vehicle it was going on.

Most people in PA argue that they "need" someone to tell them that yes, your tires a bald, your left headlight is out, your wipers suck, your horn quit, and the like. I ask the people of this state to THINK for once in your lives and take some initiative for your vehicle.
The argument I get is "it keeps junk off the roads" Well, to be honest, what does the apprearance of another person's vehicle have to do with safety? Second, if its such a good thing, then Indiana, w/o it, should have people dying right and left due to all the vehicles not being inspected.

Bottom line, motorists need to start taking the initative here and quit turning to the state for solutions to their lack of attention to their own vehicles.

Y know, RI was like that too, I had a bud so I could just buy the sticker if I wanted. Damn truck was never sniffed and I always had him do a quick brake check, just so I would know. Now I live in CT and they are rearranging thier emissons / inspection stuff. But one thing they do that I think is cool is that you do not have to get a vehicle checked until it is 4 years old. Meaning my wife's jeep will have 120+k miles on it befiore it ever gets checked. It also mean sthat my truck should be all set for another year and a half.

Sorry for the rant.

In California the safety checks don't exist. The smog checks on the other hand suck up something fierce and have to be done every two years. HOWEVER, a car less than 4 years old is exempt but you have to pay a fee (wtf?) with your annual registration (about $200 for my '02) for the privlidge of skipping a smog test, which runs $30-80. Diesels have a $500 environmental impact fee but are exempt from all smog checks. Makes me wanna get a 2wd Diesel Ram and drop in a 528 hemi and get away with it :D

Trucker, when you purchase a new vehicle in Pa., you have 10 days to get it inspected. The dealer is not REQUIRED to inspect it. You can go to any inspection station. It's a dealer scam that has been going on for many years in this state. The auto inspection process in Pa. is nothing but a welfare program for car dealers and auto repair shops. There is no reason on god's green earth to get a brand new vehicle "inspected" for anything. The auto dealers and auto repair shops belong to various "associations" that give very generous campaign contribution to state politicians. That is why this archaic system is still on the books. If you want to see a politician tap dance, ask him why it's necessary to get a brand new car inspected. Most people in this state are more interested in who's winning the ball game on TV than getting the politician's hand out of their pocket. I guess they get what they deserve.

The nice thing about NJ is that you don't pay anything extra for the inspection, as long as you go to the state facilities. Also, it is every two years, not every year like PA. And NJ doesn't open the hood (at least not im my county), so intakes, throttle bodies, etc. go completely unnoticed unless you fail emissions.

When I lived in PA, they actually take the wheels off and inspect the brakes. I had some rotors warp because they didn't torque the front wheels evenly. ANd for this I paid like $75, including smog check.

So what happens when you pull in with a full time 4x4 truck? Do they have a second set of idle rollers?

That's been the problem that I'm expecting to come up on California's 2nd generation of smog check systems. The '78 GMC truck we used to have would've probably broken a piece of equipment on the way out the back of the shop (it had a real full time 4x4 transfer case and lockable diffs) :)
