Subject: drilled hole in roof for cb ant.

Well I finally did it today, I drilled a 5/8" hole in the middle of the roof of my 2001 dakota to mount a wilson 1000 cb antenna!! I had a wilson 1000 magnet mount on it for a few days but I really hate seeing the coax and the permanent mount just looks so much cleaner. Just have to find a good place to mount the monster size RCI 2970 radio now. Second day I had it in while driving the turnpike from orlando to my house I talked to 4 stations up north, vermont, boston, albany, minnesota, so I guess it's working LOL

The only problem is that you want be able to open the ashtry & you cant use the 2 small cupholders if you have a automatic

The RCI 2970 doesn't fit under the dash in that spot without removing the console ( which I'll probably do anyway) I have to pull the console to see if it will fit and than I may modify the console so I don't lose the use of the whole thing. The 2970 is quite a bit larger than your 2510 with the heatsink on the bottom. I used to have a 2510 years ago great radio.

Any time you drill through the roof of a vehicle use a Black and Decker (or Dewalt) "Bullet Bit", these bits drill a perfectly round hole everytime.

A split point (regular drill bit) will not give you a perfectly round hole.

Hope this helps someone !

Hardbody,

Post some good clean pics once you find a good place to mount the 2970. I still haven't mounted my 2950 and since I don't have to mess with that heat sink I shouldn't have to remove any console. I chose to just buy a toolbox for my bed and put my antenna there instead of :( drilling a hole in the body.

Saw you were near Orlando, what city? Cocoa/Titusville here.

The drill bit's I used to start the hole was a regular metal bit than I went up in size 2 more times and finished with a uni-bit. When I mount the radio I'll take pics, I also have a export 2950 (sommerkamp TS-2000) that I held up under the dash it should fit ( your 2950) would fit better if the panel behind the cb was cut out or trimmed slightly. I work in Orlando but live in Sorrento just north of apopka.
