Subject: Need to ask a favor from another "4.7er"

I just want to know if my P-steering pump is excessively loud. There's a trick you can do if you hear a whine, while the motor is running put a screwdriver on the housing of the... alt, p-steering pump, etc... and put your ear up to the handle end and if a bearing is shot, the sound will travel through the screwdriver. well I didn't have a screwdriver readily handy, but I did have an empty 20oz plastic Coke bottle. I put the cap end (cap on) first to the alternator, then to the A/C compressor, then to the p-steering pump "reservoir tank" and sure sh!t it really resonated the sound through the bottle.
My question is, if you have a chance, can you take a 20oz bottle, start up your 4.7L, and you don't even have to put your ear up to it, just put the cap end on the A/c compressor, the alternator, and then onto the p-steering pump. I just wanna know if the p-steering pump makes a lot of noise, as opposed to the others.
Now I'm not stupid, It has plenty of fluid, it just has always had a little whine since day one, and before my warranty runs out, I wanna take it in. But I don't wanna go to the dealer if it's normal.
Thanks for your time, and I apologize for the long @ss post.

My 2000 had a slight whine to it also. Although I didn't do the coke bottle test. I siphoned the old fluid out and put in synthetic and it seemed to relieve the problem. The way I look at it, PS fluid needs to be changed like any other fluids in your vehicle. Hope this helps you out some.

I will tr to do this for you this weekend. I can tell you that mine is louder then I like. It is about as loud as a ford power steering pump. Haveing cut my teeth on BMW and Toyota power steering pumps I am not used to hearing a power steering pump unless the bearing is going bad!!!

Thanks guys, I should have mentioned, the truck only has 22,300 miles on it, (hehe "only") and it's a 2002 80% or so are highway, if it matters. I did the Coke bottle thing because I was to lazy to go into the garage, and my buddy left the empty bottle in there last weekend when we went boating. It just so happens it worked great.

Hi Clevite- I had a noise that I thought was my power steering pump it is a bell like rattle. It slowly got worse over a period of months, you could really hear it standing in front of the truck but not when you were inside. It turned out to be my clutch fan. Check and see if you have excessive play (where fan is bolted to engine)then check a new 4.7 on a lot to compare.I tried the screw driver trick and the noise seemed to be coming from the power steering but it was not.I cahnged clutch fan and the noise is gone. I heard 4.7 are bad for this.

No Russ, it's definitely the pump. The clutch fan just roars, and has absolutely no play. the housing of the P.S. pump vibrates like hell. I even brought the motor to about 5000 rpms and you can feel and hear it as the motor revs, I would think the clutch fan would stop making noise at 2??? rpms. But anyways, she's going back to the dealer Wednesday. I'll let ya know what the verdict is.

I had my power steering pump replaced at 12,000 miles on my '02 4.7. It was always a little loud, but on a hot day with the A/C on it would whine over the radio at a normal level.

Hey Joe,
I got them off e-bay, I can't remember the seller, but the price was $45 or by now for $55 + $10 shipping. Oh and they're APC's. There are 2 types, mine and the frosted ones that match your head lights. If you like them get a set, they're the easiest thing to install.

Hey juniork,
Did that take care of the problem, or did they give you another loud one?

With the unaided ear my pump is loud proably the loudest I have ever heard on a new vechile. It is almost as loud as a Ford pump. I did not notice any sharp increase in volume or pitch when I used a stethascope. It was by far the loudest acc under the hood.

WOW you sure doug up an old post LOL!

Not that it bothers me.

My 2003 QC 4.7 doesn't make any noise at all from any of the accesories. The only thing that pi$$ed me off was the stock rear disk brakes humming when I backed up. But I fixxed that last night.

Anyway, I have 9000 miles on it now and mine's quiet. Thought you would like to know.

I work for a dodge dealer and personally own a 01 dakota 4.7. I had a whine in my power steering after a few months. We put a new pump on it in Dec of 01 and still had the same problem. I kept watching for tech bulletins on it and never found any. I decided to try another ps pump this year.I looked up a pump earlier this year and noticed the number superceded several times. Any time they supercede a part number usually means a design change or vendor change. I ordered the latest part number ps pump and installed it. Whine is gone for sure.We have since installed the newer pump on several dakotas and it has corrected the problem on all of them.If your still under warranty have your dealer put a new pump on and whine will be no more

Not sure if anyone posted this but if you want to hear/find a certain noise on a running engine I use a lenghth of heater hose. Put one end to your ear and the other on the part you suspect is making the noise. ( I call it a poor mans mechanics stethoscope) pretty much everyone has a piece of heater hose
Rob

Sparky thanx for the info on the PS pump mine is starting to whine also.
Somethign else to replace after the ball joints and the air filter and the .......

My power steering pump is leaking fluid about the shaft. It has always had a loud whine from the pump.

I took the truck to the dealership about 6 months ago. I mentioned the whine and told them I had found fluid dripping from the lines where they enter the rack & pinion assembly. They told me it was not a power steering leak, but where the oil was dripping from the filter onto the lines during the oil/filter changes.

I go to replace the serpentine drive belt at 75,240 miles and while routing the belt around the power steering pump pulley, notice that there is a dark stain from the front where the shaft exits the pump, blown back along the bottom of the pump and down the lines.

The fluid in the pump has darkened and the level has dropped to the "COLD FULL" mark from the "HOT FULL MARK" when warm.

I call another dealership and find it is only $284.00 to purchase the pump.

So... I am not very happy at the moment.

New - Power steering pump makes a whine like a failing alternator. Dealership says noise is normal.

300 miles - Discover the left engine mount has two bolts screwed into the block finger tight and other two missing.

20,000 miles - Right front wheel "bounces" after smallest bump. Replace all four shocks with Edelbrock IAS. Find two of the originals have NO dampening when tested by HAND.

30,000 miles - Right front wheel bearing leaking grease. 2WD truck, this is a "sealed" bearing. Dealership replaces hub.

30,000 - Limited slip differential starts chattering. Replace fluid and friction modifier to get chattering to go away. Have not done any towing or heavy hauling.

45,000 - Ask dealership to look for power steering leakage. Level slowly dropping and fluid seen on fittings at rack & pinion assembly. Dealership staes no leakage found. "Fluid on fittings is oil from filter changes."

50,000 miles - Transmission (5-speed manual) noisy in neutral with clutch engaged. Lubricant leaking from bell housing. Dealership replaces with rebuilt transmission. Charges $800 to replace clutch, "since we're in there already". Haven't done any towing or heavy hauling.

50,000 - Rebuilt transmission already noisy as though input shaft bearing was not replaced in rebuild.

65,000 - Takes long cranking to start. Dealership charges $135.00 to "flash" the PCM. Recommends new battery and throttle body cleaning to fix problem. I replace battery and clean throttle body and IAC pintle and port thoroughly. Problem is not fixed.

70,000 - New clutch is chattering when engaging during damp weather. Am wondering if the machining on flywheel to remove glaze that I paid for was really done, or if the clutch was ever REALLY replaced at all.

74,756 - Different dealership checks fuel pressure and for leak down. Replaces the fuel pump. Long crank to start problem fixed, for the moment.

75,256 - Power steering pump leaking around the shaft. Long crank time to start exhibits itself again.

I am not sure I EVEN WANT to ask the tire retailer to check the front suspension ball joints for wear!

No more new vehciles for me. I'll just spend the next $22,000 restoring something a little more reliable!

Dave

Yes... I change everything, as I cannot trust a dealer's mechanics anymore. I have done everything according to the extreme service maintenance schedule in the factory service manual, which I purchased when I got the truck.

I do not even drive in the extreme service description, have never towed anything, only hauled my 500cc bike a few times, trash to the dump.

I even change the air filter every 7500 miles instead of the 15,000 the "B" schedule recommends.

I don't want to hear any of the "You haven't aintained your vehicle properly" comments...

The sad part is that the dealer mechanics insist we "grease the suspension components." Okay, I says... Tell ya what, you get your grease gun and I'll watch! I have GOT to see this... Oh yeah, don't violate the integrity of the rubber boots, either. Now, just where you going to point that thing?

The car manufacturers are run by CFO's whose jobs it is to maximize the profit margins as much as possible. They are less concerned with quality products tahn they are with pinching another penny out of the customer.

Items I have seen changed in the Gen III:
No under hood insulation year 2001.
No free ash tray/lighter 2002
Spare is now stamped steel rim, rather than matching other 4 wheels, 2003
I have heard of complaints about console lighting no longer being there under the dashboard.

And WE ALL KNOW about the suspension ball joints, right?

Anyone want to add to the list?

Yeah, it's my fault alright, but not for failing to maintain a vehicle, but for buying a lemon to start with. There's some Latin phrase for that... Let the buyer beware...

Dave

why would you take it to a dealer, all they generally do is screw up stuff. My dak has 136,000 and has never gone back to a dealer. It has only had the serpentine belt tensionr changed every thing else is as it came from the factory except for normal maintenace items.

Power steering pump whine is sometimes a bad thing? Didn't know that. I came from a Ford, it had become normal background noise for me.
