Subject: Need a Posi Rear End before Snow fall
IP: Logged

Message:
I Live in Michigan, and in some of the upper regions we are getting snow fall already. Problem is I just traded my 4x4 v6 Dak for a 4.7 V8 Dak with 4x2 and NO Posi 3.55, I'm looking to switch out the rear end for a 3.92 (?) or 4.10 with Posi so that this winter is a little more easier to deal with. Does anyone have any info where I can buy these at a good price. Must be factory parts or at least factory Quality. Thanks!

LSD (also known as Posi-traction), is very important on wet roads and icy conditions because both wheels turn at all times, where as an open end only has one wheel turning at a time.

I usually throw half a dozen shot bags in the bag, and that did just fine for me during the winter. But without posi its a little strange for me. I have plans to go to the track in the spring as well, and it would be nice not to peg leg burnout while the other tire stands still.

How bout just getting a limited slip unit or locker for the rear instead of switching out the whole differential?? I have the PowerTrax non-slip traction system on my R/T, and it works much better than the factory limited slip ever did, and was cheaper than switching gears and carrier housings for the limited slip. It took just over an hour to install and only used three diferent tools during the install. Plus, I don't have to worry about friction modifier anymore because I don't have limited slip clutches anymore. Cost was under $400 from www.southeastrt.com but I'm sure Randy or Jonas coudl get them as well. To easy to do the intsall yourself to pay anybody to do it as well.

4wheelparts has the trac-lock unit for around $150.00. This is the same one I ordered when the factory one i had went south. It is exaclty the same as the factory imited slip.

Here is the link:

I recommend the POWERTRAX and the use of AMSOIL Series 2000 75w-90.

Just take it easy in right and left turns from a stop because it can tend to fishtail with the POWERTRAX unit.

DakFreak is right.

Posi/LSD can be bad news on snow, ice or wet pavement. Yes it does send power to both wheels which can get you going quicker off the line --- BUT that doesn't mean that you will still have traction. It is still possible with LSD to spin your tires on slippery surfaces, and when you do you'll be spinning both of them, instead of just one, like you would with an open diff. And having both rear tires lose traction at once is a very bad thing -- you can lose control of the rear end very easily. With an open diff at least you have one rear tire that is not spinning, and that helps keep you going in a straight line. I live in Minnesota, and yes, I ordered my Dak with a LSD, but I wanted it for offroad, NOT for winter driving. In fact, winter weather is what almost made me NOT get LSD. But I decided to get it and just drive extra careful when it's slippery out, plus engaging 4wd will help keep me going straight.

I repeat again LSD is NOT for driving on winter roads.

Just to re-iterate, if you are going to spend money on LSD for the purpose of winter driving, you are going to be very very disappointed. You will be spending money to make your vehicle LESS roadworthy. I just checked, and the owner's manual backs me on this. I had a 98 w/ open diff and now a 2002 w/ LSD. Open diff is definitely better in the snow, ice and even rain. Trust me, it's already snowing here.

Just my experience on this, but with my past hisotry of driving my R/T in the snow, the factory limited slip woud only spin one tire when I broke tracion. ALso, the wheel that was spinning woudl push the truck in the other direction. I've installed the PowerTrax unit and with better tires, I actually had an easier time driving in the snow. Get a good set of snow tires and you will be fine no matter what type of differential you have. Also, learn to drive you vehicle int eh snow. It takes a light foot on both the gas and brake.
