I have a 1991 Dakota Xcab LE with an awesome 318 V-8... LOVE THIS TRUCK!!!!

But, there's this paint job thing going on... i've got huge paint chips coming off the top, and severe oxidization/bleaching on the hood. There's even a rust-spot on the roof about 2 feet across!!! What is up with that???

I've noticed several people on the board who've had similar problems with ther Gen 1 dakotas... WHAT DO I NEED TO DO? WHERE DO I START? AND WILL DODGE/CHRYSLER ASSIST IN THE RE-PAINTING OF THIS TRUCK?

I live in Virginia, the truck's been here all of its life... not that bad on weather, etc... Can't see any plausible reason behind this paint chipping, bleaching, and rusting.

SOMEONE PLEASE LET ME KNOW WHAT's UP... if there's any information around, please respond to this message.

I just had my truck painted because of the same reason i spent 2000 dollars including bodywork the rollpan. It first started to fade 7 years ago when i worked for a DODGE dealership and the Factory Rep saw it and had them wet sand it and it work for about 3 years then it went bad in a big hurry. He said if the problem persisted that i could have it repainted. Well i went back to the dealership and asked to see the factory Rep and the Guy had retired and the New Factory Rep basically said piss up a rope. Well I think my time and my money was a better investment than the crappy ass painters the dealership has anyways so I contacted a Buddy of mine that works for a BODYSHOP here in town and we tackled the truck together and i cant be more pleased with the results.

Hey GenIII and LiveDak, thanks guyz for the info.

I'm from the Northern Neck, near a town called Tappahannock.

So, the best thing to do, would probably not waste the time and N-R-G with the dodge reps, etc... just go ahead and have bodyshop resurface & paint it???

PS, both of you guys have good looking trux!

Mine is now a funky blue color.. kinda like smurf blue... I don't dig it, so I am trying to pick a color... I really want that copper color that dodge had a few years ago, but of course, i will get another paint mfgr to match that color.... if that don't work, i will go for the standard white or brushed aluminum look....

Peace
Bryan

I believe all (or most) of the paints for Chrysler are made by Dupont. They seem to always be refining the paints, especially if there is a problom. I have used Dupont paint mixed to the Dodge specs on some of my projects (R/C boats and cars) and have had no probloms, except for my awful painting skills. I don't think you should have to worry about buying from another paint manufacturer, just find someone who sells Dupont and have it matched from the book.

I have used PPG and Sherwin Williams automotive paints and clear coats. I have had excellent results with Sherwin Williams. I purchased my products from NAPA and I repainted my truck 4-5 years ago and it still looks great!! They were alot cheaper then PPG. I am sure that your buddy will use what his shop uses.
