My old 85 toyota died (cracked block) and I have been looking for a used truck. I looked at several Dakotas and was impressed with the power. 1st question is what is the average MPG for a 6cyl. Next I test drove a 95 8 cyl 318 SLT excab,AT power everything with 80000 miles, what might be the MPG for this truck. Finally most of the Dakota's I looked at had oil on the rear end differential, is this normal or a leak on just the ones I looked at?

I have a 2001 Club Cab 3.9l V6 4x4 and I average around 17 mpg on the highway. I have the 3.92 rear axle so that hurts my mileage some, as well as having 4x4 which doesn't help. Some get better mileage, some get worse.

The Gen2's are lighter, My 93 V6 4x2 5spd Reg cab got 20-22 MPG no mods. The V8's of the same year was only 2 mpg different. My opinion only, Get the v8, not much sacrifice for the power difference. As for the diff, alot of them "sweat" I have noticed. It never has been an issue for me.

I hope this helps.
