Well, it finally happened. I got a ticket. I knew it was coming. I just looked at radar detectors the day before thinking I needed one with the way I drive when I go home from school. So, my question for you all is, what's a good radar detector for the money. I really don't want to spend and arm and a leg to get a valentine, but what else is there? I was looking at a Cobra 9210. It seemed to be pretty good. Any opinions?

I've got an 8500 on my dash, and don't get me wrong, I like it and everything, but I sometimes still wish I'd popped the extra 100 clams and gotten a valentine.

Have had them all. Have a remote Escort in my Dak., and a Valentine 1 in my Mustang. In my opinion, those detectors are worth the money. The last one, a Bell, died after two years. The "remote" Escort was a specialty aftermarket item by a company in Washington state. Now out of business

Valentine the best? Here's what radartest.com says:

"Still capable of putting up a good show against X and K-band radar and lasers, with its stratospheric price tag, minimal features and quirky ergonomics the V1 is an also-ran compared to modern detectors. Celebrating its tenth birthday next year, making it the oldest model on the market, the V1 is clearly showing its age."

Escort 8500 or a top-line Bel get my vote.

I like the cobra myself. It even tells you if there is emegency vehicles aproaching, dissabled vehicles ahead, and railroad crossings.

I have the Escort Passport 8500 and its told me when theres been a cop ahead or behind me everytime. After about 7 tickets I've pretty much decided to get it and its saved my ass...I probably would've been on my 10th ticket by now.

It's high dollar but worth the money.

Can you guys explain these to me?

I was always under the impression that if you detected the radar, that meant you were being lit up and therefore, caught.

So, you don't have to be hit with a laser for it to be detected?

Usually if your cruising through town or somethin and there's lots of cars around what the cop is doin is sending out a radar signal then that signal bounces off and sends the signal back to him saying how fast your going.

Thing about radar is its not very precise it just bounces off moving objects not necissarily fixed on one particular thing. Thats why if you and a car are side by side but in reality your speeding just about to pass the guy when U pass by the cop, he has to judge who he thought was the one speeding.

But w/ laser it is as precise as U can get cuz he has to physically point the gun at who he thinks is speeding to get a reading.

So w/ laser its pretty much over if your hit w/ a laser reading on the detector. With radar it spreads out and gives you time to react and slow down.

Hope that helped.

Rrrockhound - Car and Driver did their test in February 2002.

V1 wins hands down!

I don't know if you trust Car and Driver, but I've always been partial to their reviews. Besides, I agree with everything they had to say about the V1, as I own one. You will never live without the little arrows once you've had them

I have a Cobra (ESD 6750Q) that is over 4 years old and it's never let me down. I can't rationalize spending more for a radar detector than I did. ($69) I think it also depends on where you live too. (as far as sensitivity is concerned) For me, my Cobra does everything I need it to do at a fraction of the cost of a Valentine. I don't need to know which direction the radar is coming from. My Cobra detects radar 360°. If it goes off, I'm slowing down regardless of which direction it's coming from.

I was going to by the valentine one but settled on the passport 8500 with remote wiring. I don't need to see the display just need to know radar or laser on to slow down. I ran the wiring through the headliner and have the radar detector just underneath the mirror. My back window are so dark anyways just need front protection. Can't even see the radar detector. Love it. Down here in South Carolina the speed limit is 70 and I get passed while doing 85 like I was standing still.

If you a planning on investing in a quality radar detector that offers top of the line performance along with ongoing maintenance and upgrades, there is only one choice that makes sense-- the Valentine One. The initial price is steep, but if you ever have a problem (i.e. drop the unit, drown it, or whatever) you can send it in to Valentine and they will repair it for a reasonable charge. As the currently shipping V1 is updated, Valentine offers current owners the opportunity to send in their existing units for an upgrade to current specs. One just goes to the Valentine web site and enters the serial number of the unit, it responds with an applicable upgrade package and cost estimate, and many times includes a recommendation as to under what circumstances the upgrade would be worthwhile. I've had my V1 for 4 years and 100k miles now and have never looked back, it is still IMHO the best unit on the market....

Best,

"Speedy"

I don't know about cops where you all live, but here in south texas, radar detector are only good for anoying you. Here the DPS turns on the laser right when you have no time to brake so by the time your valentine or your cobra beeps, the DPS is already U turning to go get you. Here what really works are two devices. One is made by UNIDEN and all it is a scanner that locks into police frequencies on a two or two and a half mile radius. Let it be note that it would also lock on fire and ambulance frequencies. So you really have to listen. The other one, I don't remember the manufacturer but it works throught GPS to locate emergency units, again this includes(cops, ambulances, fire trucks etc...)The neat thing about this one is that you can actually see where the vehicle is located on the GPS map and how far from you.

Tell me if i'm right.....

Radar works off of moving objects, but more specifically METAL objects. It goes right through plastics, glass, ect. By tilting your radiator backward or forward a couple degrees, radar is either reflected up or down. Which in turn gives you more time to slow. Not having a front plate helps too.

To avoid laser, just drive with your highs and fog lamps on all the time, even during the day. And invest in "total eclipse", a plate cover that reflects laser and red light cameras from takin your pick. These combined should really help you out.

(Plus a V1, he he he ) ;)

Since I live in VA where detectors are illegal, I don't own one. However, (and maybe I'm showing my age here) I make several trips to NW FL and have had no problems with cops when keeping my average speed around 70 mph; AND after twice having a tire blow out at 70+, I don't have any desire to go any faster on a public highway. I really like having birthdays :) Experience is a great teacher!

I usually got caught doing 45+ in a 25 mph zone
:( back when I was young and foolish!
