I just installed a black safari bar on my 99 black dakota with 2 hella lights and now I want to get some steps. What you guys think will look better (not out of place), Smitty Built tubular step bars (black) or the Dodge running boards (http://www.nwdakotartclub.com/images/Memberspics/JeffWarnat/MVC-358F.JPG)? I cant decide and I dont have two Dakotas either.

In my opinion, since you have the safari bar and lights, I think the step bars in black would look best. I think they would match the bar and lights better. Then again, that's just my opinion. It would be nice to see some pics of your truck with the safari bar on, that may make the decision easier.

I would get the black bars. I'm not familiar with the Smittybuilt one's but I have a set of the Westin black step bars and Westin Safari bars and I love the look of the combo. Just my opinion though. If you'd like, I have several pictures of Dakotas with the step bars/safari bars combo that I can email to you. I haven't seen any Dakotas with the running boards and safari bars though.

i am running the smittybuilts with a manik brush gaurd and they go together very well in my opinion. since you already have a tubular theme up front i think it makes sense to carry it around to the side of the truck. one drawback of the smittybuilt design (2000 CC) is that you will have to drill holes in the frame to mount. some other units use existing holes from what i understand.

The Westin step bars that I have didn't require any drilling. You might be better off with the Westins. I assume they look about the same. Don't know which one's cost more though.

Reason I wanted to go with Mopar running boards or anykind of running boards was to get a more completed look. The running boards go from the driver wheel to the back wheel and looks like its apart of the truck while the bars only go partial way. Ive seen several Rams/GMC trucks with running boards and it gives the truck a more completed look.

Actually, it would look like this (cept I have a dakota) http://www.dakota-durango.com/profiles/ssmits/ssmits3.jpg I also have a hard cover tunneau. So, like I said, I was thinking the running boards would give it a more completed look but dunno. Post your opinions.

That looks pretty good, but I still prefer the bars. I think that SUV's look better with running boards, but trucks look better with the step bars. But that is just my opinion. Either one would look good though.
