Subject: Cruise Control Questions

Message:
Finally got cruise control installed on my 2000 QC 4.7. I did have the factory cruise installed by a dealer.

My question is, the cruise light on the dash does not light up when I am using cruise. Should it? Or am I out of luck because it didn't come with cruise from the factory?

Thanks,

I'm not sure if the dealer is supposed to hook it up or not, or even if they can, but I would take it in,

I added factory cruise control to my 98 RC and my light on the dash works. Does the light come on when you turn to key to start the engine and tests all the dash warning lights? It could be the tech didn't install the light bulb when the cruise was installed. If the light tests you got another problem, but I'm guessing the bulb wasn't installed when the tech put the kit in. BTW: When I did mine, everything was pre-wired. The under hood control module was pre-plumbed for the vacuum and the wiring harness had a dummy plug installed to keep it clean. I disconnected the battery before starting and the under hood portion took about 10-15 minutes to install the control module and route the control cable to the throttle body. Next, I removed the air bag, disconnected the horn wiring and removed the steering wheel. I had to get a puller for the steering wheel and some specialized torx bits for the steering column upper and lower covers. I disconnected and removed the original clock spring, installed and connected the new one. Installed the switches and new backing cover on the steering wheel. Reinstalled the steering wheel. Tested the dash lights and the cruise light did not come on. Removed the bezel and instrument cluster and no bulb was installed for the cruise light. The factory kit came with the bulb, so I put it in and reassembled the dash. Reconnected the battery and took off for a test ride. Everything worked perfect. Total time involved: about 2 hours but that included having to make a run to the parts store for the special security torx bits. If I had to do it again, I could probably do it in about 45 min to an hour. The cost of this project was about $225 including the special tools I bought.
Sorry for the long rant and HTH....

Well, sounds like I'll be looking for a bulb! Just checked and no, the light does not come on when starting the truck.

Thanks for info!

KC,
Do you have the digital odometer? If you do, the cruise "light" is part of it, not a separate light on the dash.

My 98 has the digital odometer and I have a seperate light for the cruise. It's still in the instrument cluster and easily accessible. CHeck your owners manual for the location of the cruise light. If you want, e-mail me off line and I'll try to see if I can assist you further. Or, as an alternative, I'd suggest contacting McKinney Dodge on thier toll free number, 1-800-272-7050, ask for John. I must have asked him about 50 different questions before I ordered and installed my cruise system. He is very knowledgeable and willing to help. FWIW, when I installed mine, I was going to get a friend who is a DC service tech to assist, but he injured his back and was unable to help. He told me if I followed all the directions in the kit I'd be fine. The only thing I was concerned about was removing and re-installing the airbag.

39m is right the 97 and 98's have a light in the dash away from the odometer that lights up green and says CRUISE when the thing is turned on in factory installed units, go back to the dealer and have the tech finish the job, for free as that should be part of what you already paid for.

They may have to flash the body controller to tell the dash to turn the light on. Well not really flash it just enable it.

KC4X4, Did you get the problem with the cruise light fixed? and if so, what was the problem? Just curious if all the good advice and help I've gotten in the past gave me enough to pass it along to a fellow Dak owner.
