Ford's bigest problems are always relaed to their electronics and wireing. They just lack longterm durability. Ford's will seldom give you any warning before they break down and leave you stranded. Every one I know that has ever owned a ford has always had lots of problems with modules, fuseable links.......f they kept their car or truck more then 3 years. I owned one ford and will not go near another one. MY inlaws have owned alot of Fords and they have all been lemons!! So while I am sure that some fords leave the factory right I have not seen one. The only fords I have encountered that were worth a darn had been restored and repaired many times over to get rid of all the problems!!!!

82 F-150 - still running at the gin. One engine rebuild.
91 F-150. -still running at the farm. Two motor mounts have broken, which has led to two radiator replacements.
93 ranger. no problems. ever. Still running on the farm, 225k miles.
94 power stroke. no problems. ever.
94 power stroke 2. no problems. ever.
94 f-150. AC comp. went out.
95 power stroke. bearing on the rear axle shaft went bad.
02 f-150 fx4. love it.

these are the trucks currently running for Griggs Gin - Planter's Warehouse and Griggs Farms in Dooly County Ga. On these trucks, combined, we have probably spent less than 5 grand in unscheduled maint. And, as is probably obvious, these are work trucks that are worked hard.

Do I love my 02 sxt? bet your ass. Will it ever match the build quality of my previous daily drivers (91 150 & 93 ranger)? doubt it. Would I trade it for a new ranger? nope. F-150? maybe, But thats a bigger truck.

Just cause I drive a dodge (first in my family to do so) dont mean I'm blind to the other auto makers. (the truck that didnt make the list was an 88 C1500. It died and was resuccitated many times. Then it died for good. turns out chevy didnt design it with towing in mind)
Ford = reliability
Dodge = different. not many farmers where Im from in ga drive dodges.
Chevy = asphalt truck. I wouldn't even drive one on a dirt road. I know some folks that have had some success working with em, but I aint gonna try that one agian.

my .02.

Well Nate am glad someone is haveing good luck with Fords!!!! I should have clarified that I was talking about Ford Cars and Mini-Vans. I have to admit that everyone that I have known that owned a Ford F150 always liked them and had few if any problems. I can not say that about the Rangers it seems to be a 50/50 thing with the Rangers. This Dodge is the second American brand vechile I have owned and it will be the one that decides my vechile buying fate. Since my Dad left Mopar in 1976 my family has owned alot of Toyotas and have only had one of them to Dealer for warranty work. We have never ever had one break done and other then three starters since 1976 we have never had to replace anything that was not listed as a normaly maintence item. I expect this same kind of durability and build quality in my Dodge. The only vechile my Mom has owned that was not Toyota since 1976 was a 1991 Pylmoth Laser that she just traded in for a Tundra. The only non-maintence item's that had to be replaced on that car was a battery and a power sterring pump. That's pretty good for 11 years. Yah when I was liveing in Ga. the most popular 4x4 was the F-150 and the most Popular compact 4x4 were Toyota's. It seemed like the I6 was realy popular. Never understood why ford did away with it???? The fact that someone like myself actualy bought an American made vechile say volume to how much American products have improved.

This ain't baseball. Ford doesn't have to lose for dodge to win. There are not winners or losers, just happy owners. Enjoy the cars that you like.

My dad had a 1988 F-150 (bought in 1987)that he got rid of in 1998 just to get something newer. It still ran just as good as the day he bought it. It was the truck I learned to drive a manual tranny on, great truck. But yes, I still love my Dakota!!!

Well, if your friend had a real mustang, like mine, hed a beat your ass. I love my Dakota, but its 3.9L in no way in hell would beat my 1985 1/2 Mustang GT 5.0L. I agree with above. I do love my dak, but I also drive my 5.0 and love it too. Different modes of travel. One is fast, the other just looks good/tall. Later.

I agree so far i've put u-joints, clutch, water pump, intake manifold gasket, ball joints, and door seals. On my dakota with 75K miles that i've had for 6 months (none of those things were bad when i bought it except the door seals)Right now it need steering rack bushings because they dry rotted and are falling right out. I have a 92 F-150 that i've had for 3 years, it has 150K miles on it and i've installed a starter, starter solenoid and balljoints, thats it for unscehduled maintanence, except for the spring shackle i broke when i got airborne. And the ford gets beat just as hard as the dodge.

Nate......

I went to Commerce for the Fun Ford Weekend back at the beginning of summer.

A Ford to look out for are those Dooley County Sherrifs, in the Crown Vics. They had one on display out there with a big Vortech Hair dryer on it.

I have owned and will own many Mustangs. In 2 years when the Dakota and Durango are paid for, I will be chompin at the bit to find a used '03 COBRA.

I love me Dak. She runs pretty darn good, and it's a fun cruising vehicle. I can also tow with it. What a combo.

I think i'm the first in my family to drive an American car in a long long time.
Dad drives a 4runner
Mom drives a civic
Sister drives a Xterra
Bro-in-law drives an altima
Girlfriend drives a civic
Grandma drives an Accord
The list goes on and on with other relatives.

I think I may be the automotive black sheep for my taste in trucks. But I love my '00 4.7L. Its fun to drive, reliable, and hauls a$$. My previous vehicle was a Jeep Cherokee Limited. It was a total POS. I almost didn't by a dodge because of it. But I made the right decision. In the end.

I hate SUV's as well. They are dangerous to the people who drive them and everyone else on the road. Many of the people who drive them here in S. Florida are soccer moms driving 7500 pound suburbans and excursions. They get in the way and cause reguler accidents down here.

Just to mess around with you CThomp, but Hondas are indeed American-made. They are made over in Ohio. I don't like them, but I do have to give them credit, they are some of the most reliable cars ever made.

Yeah I know Bill. I was just going by manufacturer country of origin. I can't knock hondas either. I actually do enjoy driving the civic. Especially 127hp 5spd version. Quick, light and effiecent. Drove probably 240 miles this weekend and burned maybe 1/4 tank in my girl's civic.

As far as reliability goes. My dad put 350,000 miles on his '89(or '90) civic si before he finally retired it. Only thing that ever broke was the a/c.

if you want to see that Vic and our twin turbo Vic in action, you have to do over 85 heading north on I-75 @ the exit 117 trap in Pinehurst. Or drive exactly the speed limit in a suspicious manner. Both are the personal rides of our current dooly county sherriff, Van Peavy. The turbo is his old one, and the SC is his new one. Both of which were 100% paid for with confiscated drug money off I-75, which is a main drug traffic artery from miami to the rest of america.

A truck is a truck...a car is a car....they function the same way, therefore, they all are equal. Some may sell more, some may look better, and some just may pick up more girls, but they all do the same thing: drive. It's the owner (and i should say previous owners) that will decide the outcome of the vehicle. Dodges look great, ford's have a long reputation, chevies are built tough, and toyotas are........well, help me out on that one...but anyways..u get my drift :)

My dad had a '87 Ford Ranger with 295,000 mile on it and the only thing he changed was a bad fuel injector. He sold it for $3,000 and bought a new one. I love my Dak, he loves his Ranger. To each his own. I just prefer the overall size of the Dak comparred to the Ranger. My $.02.
