Went to a local Transmission specialty shop in town, asked for price on complete flush& fill. the owner told me that he won't do it, too much of a risk of stirring up contaminants.
So i asked about installing a ShiftKit, He told me that they are too severe for our light duty Transmissions.
Question #1: how am i supposed to reap the benefits of a good synthetic fluid if i can't change all the old out
Question #2: I thought (through reading in this forum) that quicker firmer shifts were better for transmissions in general
Any knowledge to lay my fears to rest would be greatly appreciated

I would say it is ok to change the fluid and filter. Flushing may dislodge something but just draining and filter should be ok.

I used a set of ramps and a kiddy pool under my truck. I changed both filters and I was able to drain 8 quarts out of it with it up on ramps. I let it drain for 30 minutes. So if the whole thing holds 14-16 quarts I was able to replace around 50%. I did this at 10,000 miles. I will servie the transmisiion again at 30,000 the same way. SO depending on how much I get out I will be looking at 75%-90% synthetic fluid in the trans buy 30,000 mile mark. My Moms Toyota has a drain plug on the pan and the pan only holds 2 liters of fluid the rest is in the T/C, cooler and case. So I told her we can simply drain the pan every oil change and add two liters of Amsoil Trany fluid. If we do this 8-10 time we will have changed out all the fluid with synthetic. Their is also the method posted on Amsoil web site for do it your self flushing. I look at everything long term. I always stay ahead of oxidation so I was in no rush to get every once of non-sythetic tranny fluid out. The factory ATF+4 is pretty good it is just over priced for what you get. I noticed a difference in shift quality by replaceing just 1/2 of the total volume of fluid with Redline Syntetic C+ATF so I would not sweat it too much unless you have abused your tranny and let the fluid oxidize. THe point of synthetic fluid is that is resists oxidation better. Oxidation forms varnish and this is what kills your tranny. So the most important thing is to stay ahead of oxidation. Once you varnish up a transmission really bad you are realy rolling the dice buy trying to power flush it or putting in anything that will dislodge varnish or sediment. I am not a big advocate of power flushing engines or transmissions but with that said the transmissions that realy do not need to be flushed are the best canidates for it. Vechiles that have had their fluid changed and regulary and are between 50,000 and 75,000 miles and only have very slight varnish build up are best canidates. If you trany fluid is always black even after changeing the fluid then their is a preety good chance that your tranny will not survive a flush. Their is always a chance of a lot of varnish being dislodged and causeing a blockage. Their are places that will do this but most of them are fast oil change places and private garages. Most Manufactures recommend against power flushing a trany or engine. I hope this helps a little!!!!

Hey Sandman:
Thanks for the info, my Dak has 36,000 miles on it and the ATF is in pretty good shape, i guess i was just trying to get a full fluid swap all at once (she slips shifting from 1-2 under WOT). I'm guessing that with my fluid in good shape it's not such a big deal then.... Also, does the 42RE Tranny have 2 filters, or is that just the 4.7 V-8's
Thanks again for your help
Gary

Only the 45RFE has two filters that are servicable. You might want to ask CW about the slipage in 1-2 shift. If this was a GM trany I would tell you to replace the 1-2 shift servo and spring, check your second gear holding band while your have the pan off because they frequently fail anyways and you migh as well servie it. I would also recomend a fluid change and a shift kit. If your fluid was brown, smeeling burnt or you had alot of friction material in pan I would say that it was time for over haul. You would be amazed what new fluid can do to shift quality. You might also check for any TSB's relateing to 1-2 shift problems. You might also check for codes and test solinoids while you have the pan off!!I am sorry I gave the advice out of order you know CW could probably get you the spec's out of a unit repair manual for you if you ask him nicely he is a realy good guy. P.S. I almost forgot you can check line pressure rather easily as well and CW will proably need to know that before he will be able to help at all!!

Again, many thanks, I am shooting for a fluid change & a Shiftkit install, just trying to get my ducks in a row, I've read that the Governer Pressure Solenoid might be the culprit. I'd rather be able to get this swapped at the same time as i do the rest of the work.
CW: what are your thoughts on this.....Please
Thanks again
Gary
