Subject: Oscillating Brakes
IP: Logged

Message:
I've had my 99 CC 4x4 3.9l Dak since Feb. I noticed an oscilation in the brakes around 34K mi. I read here that the factory pads are very hard and could cause warpage of the rotors. I went to put on new pads and rotors and found that the fronts had been replaced right before I bought it. I changed them anyway. The problem did not go away so I replaced the rear shoes and turned the drums. This helped, but I still have the problem when braking. It seems to be between about 45-35 mph with moderate brake pressure. Does anyone have any ideas as to what is causing this?

So you have all new rotors and pads AND shoes and resurfaced drums and it is still doing it?

Yes it is, and I replaced all associated hardware and fluids. This all helped, but it is still there. Could it be something in the ABS?

Tell me this do you feal the pulsing in the steering wheel too?

If so and you have replaced all of what you have said you did. I would start looking at the front suspension. Like the Tie-rod ends, ball-joints, Idler-Arm, Pitman-Arm, and maybe bad tires.

Not saying all of that is BAD but one of these items can cause the puls in your brakes.

That's just my guess.

pull the rotors back off and look at the face of the hub(where the rotor sits) and the back side of the rotor. clean off any dirt/rust that may be there. if the rotor cant sit flat on the hub, it will not spin "true" and feel like a warped rotor. I work on vehicles for a living and have seen many new rotors that were not machined correctly, but i would start by making sure there isn't any dirt/rust build up.

I do feel the pulsing in the steering wheel, so I will check out all of the front components. I rotated the tires when I originally did the fronts so I don't think that is it.
I was planning on pulling off the rotors and indexing them this weekend so I will pull them off and check for dirt/rust.
Thanks JRM and dragrdan for your advice.
