At what mileage is the proper time to change out the oil in my new Grand Cherokee Sport 4.7l? I was thinking 1st change at 1500 miles with regular oil then at 7500 (recommended) with synthetic from there on end. What oils are recomended for synth and non synth?

Thanks!
Chris

First oil change should be at 1 month or 1500 miles, whichever comes first. This cleans and protects the engine from any dust or contaminants that might have gotten in during the manufacture and/or assembly process.
--------------------------------------------------
As for recommendations, it is always best to use manufacturers specifications without deviating more than "10" on either side. Adjust for your location and climate (see below) and driving style.

--------------------------------------------------
VISCOSITY..in the general term is defined as " a fluids resistance to flow". it's a measure of the internal friction of the fluid or the resistance to the movement of one layer of molecules relative to an adjacent layer.

THE LOWER (SMALLER or FIRST #, as in "10w-_) NUMBER.. is the Cold Cranking measurement, made at low temperatures, using a concentric cylinder viscometer to predict the oils cranking resistance in an engine during cold starting.

The measuring devices, or viscosmeters, most often used are in the form of close-fitting concentric cylinders. The fluid being evaluated is placed between the cylinder walls, the outer cylinder is held stationary and the inner cylinder is rotated. The speed of rotation is measured for a given force to calculate the viscosity, most commonly reported in cp or centipoise units. Also known as Absolute Viscosity.

THE HIGHER (BIGGER or SECOND #, as in "-30") NUMBER...is commonly measured in capilary tubes, in which the time for a fixed volume of fluid to flow through the tube under gravity at operating temp (100c)is measured and reported as cSt or centistokes. This is used most commonly to report the normal operating viscosity of motor oils or the higher number.
--------------------------------------------------
" 0W- " is a viscosity GRADE, not a viscosity MEASUREMENT.

When testing for cold fluidity, the temperature is lowered approximately 5 degrees centigrade between each test.

The Cold Crank Simulator Apparent Viscosity is tested at:

-20 C for 10W-
-25 C fpr 5W-
-30 C for 0W-

It is my understanding that the oil has to be labelled at the lowest temperature it meets the specifications.

It may not be long before someone comes out with a " -5W-30 " which would correspond with -35 C
--------------------------------------------------
As for a which oil? Oil is like a religion. Everyone has their own opinion as to "which oil" to use. My recommendation is to use whichever 100% Synthetic Oil you desire, and you will see as many different opinions on this site as there are Dakota owners.

yeah and another dimbulb snake oil salesman is heard from. You obviousely have never worked in an engine plant as the ones that d/c run make sure the blocks are clean buy using a triple solvent rinse. Every 3000 is good I have put as many as 350,000 mi on d/c gas engines using dino oil in my fleet of delivery vans and never had a problem with any of them because I "did not change the oil at 1500 or use over priced synthetics". Follow your owners manual as I am sure if something goes wrong with your engine using the previous advise (even if most of it is correct) that if you tell your dealer or d/c zone rep "a guy claiming to be a oil dealer on the internet told me so, so you guys are wrong" when your engine blows that the only thing you will hear is great peels of laughter. I asked a kid that worked at a Murray's if he would pay to replace my engine if I took is advise and put the 5w20 he was telling me an amsoil salesman told him would work just fine in my truck AND put it in writting and sign his name to it in front of a notary and he said "NO WAY" for the temp range the owners manual recommended 10w40. See guys there is no way to actually proove that any oil brand you claim to have put in your engine is actually the oil you put in. A receipt prooves purchase but not that you actually used it.

Chris,
According to check chart publications (2002 Edition, First Printing, Pg. 8 Col.1) The recommended oil for the 4.7L Engine is : above Zero - 10w-30, below 100F - 5w-30.
I also recommend running a new vehicle for about 1000-1200 miles and doing the first oil change.
I also recommend using the Amsoil products due to the fact that I have been using them for many years in my trucks and equipment and I have had excellant results.
My dad is using the Amsoil 0w-30 in his 4.7L Durango and it runs so much quiter at start-up and it's getting more miles per gallon than it did with whatever it had in it from the factory.

I just purchased a new 2002 dak. The dealer put a sticker on the windshield to remind me to come in for my first oil change at 1 mo. or 1500 mi.

Ignore billy bob. The only cool billy bob I can think of is Thornton (the actor). Oh yes, and the guy on TV reruns billy bob Walton from Walton's Mountain.

Hey TJ,
That was Jim Bob on the Walton's NOT Billy Bob and Yes, The local Dodge dealer here in my home town recommends cutting the first oil change interval in half (1,500 miles) and .... This is done free of charge along with a nearly 100 point inspection.

Dr. D,
What planet are you living on???? Do you really think they do a 100 point inspection? The techs get flat rate for everything they do, so the quicker they get the truck out of their bay and another one in, the quicker they make their money.

Your engine will pretty much be broken in within the first 600-1000 miles. You realy do not have to follow any extreme break in procedure anymore. Their are a few things that I like to do that are a little different from current owners manual. I still like people to vary their speed ever 15 minutes, I still like people to accelerate slowly up to speed and do not tow anything the first 500 miles and I think that you should not exceede 75MPH the first 250 miles. At 600 mile change your oil and filter. I recomend a a premium filter like Baldwin or Hastings and a decent oil like a synthetic blend or 100% synthetic. Change the filter and oil again at 3000 miles and go to 100% synthetic and change acording to usage and oil recomendations. The Baldwin B34(short) or B2(long) filters fit the 4.7 and I suspect that they are the same as the Amsoil filters for our trucks. If you want synthetic oil Amsoil would be my first choice but I have used Mobile 1 since 1988 as well with good results. If you are going to use conventional oil try to stay with the more robust oil like Rotella, Havoline 3, Delvac, Castrol GTX. Never use anything lighter then 10W30 in conventional oil unless you live in Artic Cirle or Alaska no matter what anyone may try to tell you about clearances and tolerances blah blah blah ..........

MightyDak,

Sorry to hear that you have not received your literature. Due to the overwhelming number of catalog requests, occasionally one or two requests will fall through the crack.

Revisit my website, give me your mailing information, request another catalog, and insert in the "message" area that this is "MightyDakSXT" from DodgeDakotas.com, and I'll send some Amsoil Stickers also. If you don't put them on your truck you can give them to some neighborhood kids (or your own if you have kids).
