I'm going to be rotating my tires soon, I would like to do it myself. My friend said, "take it to a shop so they balence them too" it should be done. I don't see the point of balencing the tires, unless the tire will be taken off the rim. Is my friend on crack, I think I'm right.

This will be my first time doing this, is there anything I must look out for? Any points would be great.

Thank in advance
Anthony

Rotating tires yourself? Don't waste your time and energy. If you have a Discount Tire Company in your area, stop by there. They will rotate your tires for free, as well as flat repairs. They also have all the tools to do it in a hurry. If you want them balanced, they will charge you for the balancing. You shouldnt need them balanced, unless they are vibrating. This could be due to a thrown weight, bad tire, or bad driving habits.

Hope this helps

Anthony, save yourself a few bucks. All you need is a floor jack and some jack stands. Its pretty simple to rotate your tires. It takes an hour or so. Just put the front right on the right rear and the right rear on the right front. Same for the other side. your tires don't need balancing unless your feeling vibration or hear a thumping noise when driving. Also, when rotating your tires yourself you can check them for anything unusual, ie. wearing unevenly, holes, cuts, nails, etc. Its good to know your truck yourself.

Yah take it to a tire chain and they will air gun your lug nuts on with 10,000 lbs of torque. This will make it impossible to change your tire next time it goes flat. Also they will probably cross thread several of them, so they will snap off the next time you wrench on them to get em loose. Lol I lost two posts when I had to use my foot to get the lug nut off. On my other vehicle I lifted the vehicle off the ground trying to loosen their handywork… On the posts that snapped off I had to take off my drum and pound the broken ones out buy new ones to replace em… When I called them on the fact that I lifted the vehicle off the ground with no results the guy said “…yah we use air guns on those, you WONT be able to get them off.” Man I was pissed.

I took my old van in to a shop to get its tires rotated, over a year ago. This is before I got my Dakota. It took over 2 hours to get my tires rotated. It's a long story, a wrecked $120 wires hub, stupid shop. That's why I do all/most of the maintance myself on my Dakota.

I get to take my time, clean the back of the rims and tires check my brakes and of course check the condition of the tires. Money and time is not a problem, it's how good the job is done.

Thanks for the responses

Beware! I had my tires rotated on my '98 Dakota and had some idiot remove the drum (must have been checking the brakes or something). Anyways, he forgot to replace the drum and at 70MPH on the interstate offramp my brakes went to the floor and the ABS lights came on. Thank Goodness I got stopped! Chrysler Roadside towed the truck and Goodyear had to pay all the bills.....

Rotating the tires is to me a no no. By doing so, you just miss what the tires are telling you about suspension alignament. If you rotate every 5 or 10k miles, takes almost a maniac to detect any abnormallity on the wearing of tires. Note that right after the rotation, feels like the car is riding on high shoes, and will until the tire wear reajusts to its new working position. On mine, i use 245 at front and 255 rear. Also, i prefer to buy 2 then 4 at a time. Remember; The better tires should be at the front axle and never let nobody over torque your nuts. Just my opinion. Good luck

I work in the local Costco tire shop and rotations are free, a balance is $5Cdn per tire.We airgun the nuts snug and then torque them to the spec of the vehicle.Torquing is done first by a Shop "lead" and then by an installer ,to ensure nothings missed.New tires always go on the back, this is the Costco procedure ,so if your front tires are worn back are rotated to the fronts and the new ones go on the rear.

Note : you must be a member for the Tireshop to be able to work on your vehicle,so technically its more than $5Cdn ,but lets not be pedantic.

Yeah, unless your having ride problems with the tires don't have them balanced. Almost everytime I have mine balanced the ride like sh1t and I have to take it back and have them balanced again, usually they do it right the second time around though. Happens at a lot of shops too. I have about 45k on my Michelin's and it's been 15K since the last balance and they ride perfect. I guess I might be a little anal about this since I drive about 90% of the time at 75+ and a shaking tires get to you after awhile.

They pull the weights off, slap the tire on the balancer and plug a weight on where the balancer says to, and they are done. They don't check the balance after they weight is on the tire to make sure the tire is actually balanced. Verified thats how they do it at a couple of shops on my second trip back.

Better to do the job wrong the first time and have to do it over again,, Oh wait a minute,, that's not how the saying goes, Better to do the job right the first time so you don't have to fix it a second time.

Love the stripped lugnut thing too. I had some time to burn while out of town and stopped in to have the tires balanced and rotated. Next month I was doing brakes and found out they stripped 2 lugs out. After some bitchin they paid to have it repaired. Wasn't a fun job either because the cars front hub and hub bearings had to be pulled to replace the lugs.

Sorry about the ranting, guess thats what I get for posting at 3am.

i prefer rotating my own tires. I can check the wear, check brakes and then as long as tires are off, you can grease the points under there. Lets you see whats going on under there. Like everyone else says, takes about an hour.

HOWEVER, if you ever want to cash in on a tire warranty, you NEED proof of rotation every 7000 or so miles. Meaning you need a receipt for having it done. Otherwise, forget all about your tire warranty.

It's tire rotation, not rocket science. If you have the tools to do it yourself, go for it. If some place like Discount Tires will do it for free, and you have the time, fine. If not, don't bother. The whole point of rotating them is to get a few more miles on them. If you have to pay for it, you'll spend more than you'll save, so it's not cost effective.

Any time somebody else removes and replaces the lug nuts - for whatever reason - make sure you check the torque with a real torque wrench as soon as you get home. Loosen and then re-tighten all the nuts in the correct criss-cross pattern.

guys, he just asked where the jack was, maybe he just has a flat?

cant, i would think the jack should be under your rear seat. at least it is in my QC don't know for sure on a cc but it seems like a logical place for it. and as mentioned above, if you do it yourself or have anyone else do it, use a torque wrench and torque them to 100 ftlbs.
