I have a '97 with 212,000 miles.I need to replace the heater core (1st time) but I'm starting to wonder if I'm pushing my luck here and I should just get a new one before it self-destructs!I've only had to replace a fuel pump and a timing chain so far. Any other high mileage Dakotas out there?

01 4.7 cc Auto. Bought the day before 9/11 brand new.

Currently has 84,000 miles on it! Just got back to Austin from Georgia on Sat. Not a single problem with it (not including the multiple wrecks, and gas cap :)

listen to your vehicle and it will tell you what is wrong.

For you guys with 4x4's you need to torque your wheel lugs every time to prevent rotor warpage.

Jim,

I've just purchased a 1999 Dakota, 3.9, 4x4 with 126000 miles about 6 weeks ago. I'd ask you what makes you think you need a new heater core? No heat?

If you've got no heat then flush your heater core as directed on several other posts on the site and I'd bet you'll regain cabin heat. (search "no heat")

The Dak I bought had a no heat problem and I followed the directions and am now toasty warm in Iowa.

Hope this helps.

Jim,

I wouldn't worry about replacing the heater core.

I just had mine replaced, $563. Ouch. I would not go with a oem, i had to replace mine after 50k miles, heck it's a 2000 durango. Oh, you will have to drain your ac and remove the condensor (i think that's what it's called) to get to the heater core. Not, a job i would do myself, if, i screwed up the ac or even caused a leak, i couldn't see myself tearing my dash apart for the second time. lol

I took it to a local shop that does ac work and they did a great job. They showed me the difference between a Modine heater Core and the OEM. The Modine is a better heater core, thicker walls. You can really tell the difference once you have it in your hands.

1997 CC 5.2L 4x4.

141,700, bought it 4 years ago at 76k. Tons of front end issues, but engine and tranny strong.

Eyeing a 2000 4.7L 4x4 CC (exact same color, no less)...with....11,000 miles.
