That picture is of the SSR which only gets the 5.3 vortech at 285HP. The SS Silverado 1500 only comes in the extended cab with allwheel drive and looks like the current Silverados. The SS Silverado 1500 will get the 6.0 vortech with 345hp though. I also agree with Kota, that 6.0 is no 500CI viper motor.

Over the next 2 years you will see 12 new vechile launchs from GM. We have already seen a couple of them. You will see a choice of engines in the SSR after the first year. It is the same with the TrailBlazer platform. First they only offered the I6 4200 Vortec engine and now they are also offering an all aluminum V8 on the platform. They have an I4 and Turbo I5 that they will be offering in various products based in the I6.

Chevy's 5.3 and 4.8 v-8s DO have more HP than Dodge or Fords, but they also have alot less torque.

Also, have you heard of the big problems people are having with piston slap in the 4.8 and 5.3 GM v-8s? There are entire websites devoted to the problem. Several independent techs have doccumented the trouble and why it is happening, but GM keeps saying "this is normal."

Do you think it is NORMAL for a 1/2 ton pick-up's v-8 to burn over a quart of oil between changes at under 20K miles? I don't!

That engine in the Trailblazer may seem innovative, but its not. BMW has been building inline sixes with simialr set-ups for decades. GM just figured it out. Have you seen the number of recalls on the Trailblazer? Not exactly confidence inspiring...is it? A lady in our office has one and says it gets horrible gas mileage as well - somewhere around 12mpg!

Besides, the new Chevy trucks are flat out UGLY! That Avalanche ugliness is now being carried over to all of Chevy's trucks...if you like this, fine, but I think its hideous!

See...its not so peachy over at GM after all. I'd stick with Chrysler's trucks. The Germans will eventually get the bugs worked out of Chrysler and at least you get a better base warrantly than Ford or GM.

As a 12 year Ford driver...I am going to Dodge for my next truck and I looked hard at and drove everything.

You could do alot worse than the Dakota with a 4.7...believe me!

I love my Dakota, but my dad bought an Avalanche last December and has put 12,000 miles on it and has had no problems. Whenever I have driven it I have been very impressed. It rides very nicely and has a lot of power. It may not be the nicest thing to look at (alhtough he likes it, and it is growing on me) it really has been a great purchase.

i read that the SSR just got cut for production and it will be just a concept for a few more years.

GM actually tried to make an inline six like the one in the avalanche a while back but couldnt get it together but now they did... i could understand if they had some problems. its not new technology (variable valve timing)... honda has been using it in there V-tec engines for almost a decade now.

man i just want dodge to put that Razor concept car (12 second turbo 4 banger) into production... i would take two!

Having just done a bit of checking, I found an article in the Detroit News, dated 7 May 02, saying that GM cut a deal to allow them to start production of the SSR in the last quarter of this year at the Lansing Plant. It seems that some environmentalists were concerned about the pollution of other nearby plants, but they reached an agreement on the deal.

does anone remember the dodge Sidewinder Concept?
it came with 640hp viper engine
21 inch rims on the front
22 inch rims on the rear with flame tread tires

personally i don't like the looks of the SSR
I think if dodge built the dakota sidewinder it would be a hit, even with a less potent engine

I agree that dodge needs to do something to compete. They need to come up with something with more muscle without haveing to use the V10 viper motor.

I thought about how mothers feed their babies with tiny little spoons and forks, so I wondered what do Chinese mothers use? Toothpicks?

RE: Chevy Piston Slap

Message:
In a chance to at least defend chevy a little, i have a 04 silverado with the 4.8 and I have no piston slap, nor do I burn oil at all, the thing is one of the nicer trucks I've ridin' in. The tourqe is not what I wanted out of it, but it will do, seeing as how I paid far less then a brand new F-150, and to get the dodge I would want would still be a little higher then what i paid for my chevy. So, overall, piston slap for me is a myth.
