Subject: Mobil1 shelf life?
IP: Logged

Message:
My local Wally World (WalMart) has the 5 qt. jugs of Mobil1 for 17.88. I would like to stock up but am wondering just how long this stuff will last sitting on a shelf in my garage?

Thanks!

Shop other WalMarts, the supers in my area are cheaper than the regulars, like $14.50

KC4X4,

Technically, engine oils have shelf lives of four to five years.

However, as years come and go, unused engine oils can become obsolete and fail to meet the technical requirements of current engines.

Therefore, don't "overstock" with the hope of using the oil in a 2007 model, since today's oil's may not be formulated to meet the requirements set for the new engines.

Definitely the full synthetic! I've been looking for the 5qt jugs for some time. My local Wal-Mart is a supercenter. Today was the first time they had these in stock. The one quart bottles are nearly $5, so this was quite a savings.

Glad to know this stuff is safe to keep awhile. I may go buy 4 or 5 jugs for the next few oil changes.

THANKS!

That equals $3.58 a qt. plus tax.

How long can you leave Mobil1 in the crankcase?

I just bought three 5 quart jugs for 17.88 each (WallMart).

I wish I could find them for 14.50. I would probably but a dozen!

Art I published a TSB a couple of weeks back dealing with just this issue. It basicly says to change all power steering fluids over to ATF+4 spec. fluids as it is supior in both hot and cold extreme temps then the older 7176 Hydralic Power steering fluid. They recomend that the system be flushed and refilled with ATF+4 the first time the system needs to be serviced. The TSB indicated that the two fluids were compatiable. The easiest way to do this is to unhook the low pressure side (return side) from the resorvoir and place it in a large container. Start truck up and at idle it will be pumping the fluid into your container quickly. You keep adding fresh fluid like Amsoil ATF to the resovoir. Once fresh fluid begins to flow shut off truck. reattach hose and fill resovoir. This works best with two people. I on the other hand just suctioned the resovoir out and filled it up with Amsoil ATF+4. I will do this about 3 or 4 more time in the comeing mounths untill it is all replaced with ATF+4. I noticed a big improvement in the feel of the power steering. It is alot smoother and is more responsive.

Art,
The AMSOIL ATF is what you would use in your Dakota. It is very hard to get all of the fluid out of a power steering system but you can get the majority out.

NOTE :
A Rack and Pinion Steering System will last so much longer when using Synthetic ATF.
