Since my Dad retired from the Army he has been an over the road truck driver. In the last 24 hours he has seen 3 Dakota's 2001 +++ that have had under hood fires. He drives from Michigan to New York via Canada so he see's alot of vechiles each day. We should all keep an eye out for the potential problem. I am guessing a bad wire splice but who knows it could be fuel system related just as easily!

I had an 86 Chevy that caught fire once... and a 77 Chevy that did it too. Hm. I think my 80 did too, when it backfired through the carburator a bunch of burning gas. That was fun...

Still, the oil fire on the 86 wins for 'Most Smoke'. :0)

My 95' Chevy needs an engine overhaul, air conditioning compressor and evaporator .... Plus it needs a new transmission.

I wish I had never sold my Dakota.

Funny that you posted this. You beat me to it. On 9/7 I was out driving my 01 Quad Cab with my wife when we smelled something electrical burning and a few seconds later my fan stopped. I generally keep my fan on defrost all of the time. Since the fan and A/C seem to have an interlock/relay neither works. We have a lot of humidity here and the bottom of the truck is always dripping. When I ran some wires for my stereo I noticed that under the pass side the carpet was damp. I've heard of this on posts before about improper drainage but I never checked it out. Either my fan or relay is gone and I was a hair away from a carbeque. I bought my Dak new in Oct 00. There may be more to this than we think. Take it to the dealer next week to get it figured out. KEEP YOUR EYES OPEN WE DON'T NEED ANY MORE DAKOTA FIRES. This may be a new problem on the 01s thats just starting to rear it's ugly head.

Forgot to add that the whole time the fuses never popped. Whatever smoked burnt itself up without popping any fuses. I smelled the burning smell again about 10 min later when I took the fan switch to on then off to try it again. So I pulled the fuses for the Fan/Air Cond and left the switch off. Whatever it is seems to be not fuse protected. You may want to tell your wives about this also. If I would have left the fan switch on the outcome may have been a whole lot different. I've had the truck 2 years and it has 45,000 miles. 2001 bought in Oct 2000.
