Well guys, buying time. The truck I want is a brand new '02 Graphite CC R/T with 10 miles on it. The sticker is $26,050. It has almost every option. Chrome wheels, everything, minus soft tonneau. What are some incentives going on right now? What would be a good price to pay for this? I need all the help I can get for talking the dealer down. It's my first time buying a new vehicle. All the help you can give would be appriciated. Thanks in advance.

Ask to see the invoice price. The dodge dealer in my town wants 200 over invoice that should be your goal.

Accept only invoice or go elsewhere, there are plenty of dealers who will give it to you. Where do you love BTW?

I let them talk and talk and talk for about an 1 1/2 hours, after they invested that much time, I told them I was paying "X" amount or nothing at all. Of course they said no at first so I walked out, before my key hit my car door he was asking me to come back.

Basically the more time they spend with you the less they are with other customers, so they have to make a sale, it's just a matter of them understanding you aren't going to be a push over.

my 4.7 cents worth.

be an educated consumer. Look up on edmunds.com the invoice pricing for the base truck and for options. If the truck has been on the lot for a while the dealer has gotten back around $300/month for a max of 3 months from the factory for it sitting there. Find out the delivery date to the dealer, subtract a max of $900 off the invoice price (what you found, not what the dealer told you) and let them have $200 over that final price. They are a business and have to make some amount of money off the sale. Good luck.

I second what Big Blue said. The best thing you can do is walk in to the dealer with a bunch of paperwork from the Internet. Price the truck both on Dodge's website and on Edmunds with the exact same options as the truck you want. That way you know what the car cost the dealer and how much the truck is actually worth. I did that with my purchase and it really cuts down on the crap the dealer gives you. They know it isn't worth lying to you when you have hard numbers in your hand.

I concur with big blue. You may not get invoice every time especially if its a popular car/or the dealer is moving alot of cars. But do not pay anything over 3 or 4% over invoice. If the want anymore go elsewhere because they dont want to sell you anything.........

Ever wonder why sticker prices are so damn high.......... because they know there are dumb asses out there that pay them.

I did my homework before I bought my Dakota, so I knew how much I wanted to pay. I was pricing out Toyotas and Dodges four months before I planned on actually purchasing anything. The Dodge dealer didn't want me to leave. Even after telling them several times that I didn't plan on buying until many months later. Because they didn't get the concept of me not wanting to purchase at that time, I started to toy with them. I dangled several carrots. They took my potential trade-in for a test drive. (Luckily I had a Tacoma brochure in my passenger seat) Then I told them that I didn't feel comfortable committing to a price until I check other dealers. It also helped that I said, "I'm so impulsive sometime! I really have to fight the urge to sign something right now." I kept saying that and doing the whole tortured bit until they kept lowering the price to the point I couldn't say no. When all was said and done, they paid off my trade-in and I got my Dakota under invoice, then I got the rebate and they threw in the 7/100 warranty. I think the only reason I got the deal that I did is because I didn't care if they sold me a truck. I had nothing to lose since I wasn't really planning on buying until later.

research, research, research. I used autobytel.com and got a $27,000 (sticker) for $21,000. Plus no hassel or headaches from multiple salespersons! I believe carfax.com has info on vehicle purchasing also, but it'll cost a few $$$.

26,000 for an R/T?? Man if its that much might as well get a Lightning. I didn't realize the new R/T's were that expensive. If I were you I'd get a 2001 it'll be alot cheaper, I've seen some as cheap as $19,000 w/ hardly no miles on em.

Your problem with going used is that you can miss out on the $3000 rebate OR 0% financing. Also with a new one you will get the 7/70 extended warranty included plus road-side assistance. Something to think about also is that with the $3000 rebate you are also saving yourself that in taxes. i.e. if you pay 7% in taxes then you are saving yourself an additional $210 by taking the rebate. Plus if you were so unlucky as to total the truck when you drive it off the lot you would already be $3000 ahead with the insurance company. As for getting the lowest price possible, those are all good ideas. The more time you spend the more help you are going to get. Don’t be a prick; it gets you nowhere. Research as much as possible, the more you know, the more weapons you have. And if you know the invoice price (from your research) just tell them that you aren’t interested in playing games, you just want to get to the bottom dollar and save you both some time. Now, here is your problem. One you are dealing with a hot item. A graphite R/T is hard to come by. Two, you are dealing with very limited stock so it won’t bother them too awful much to ask more than invoice, because they know that they will have someone else along shortly to look at it, especially with the incentives. Oh, and one other important thing, go sometime during the morning, during the week. This will be a very slow time for them, and they will be more interested in selling you something so that they can get their count up for the day.

Hope this helps,
Jason

I went to the dealer on the last day of the month and they were DESPERATE to sell me one. No one had met their numbers for the month so they would have given me a heck of a deal. Too bad I had to get my dad for all the paperwork--like two days later. I don't know if this would work in your case cause it was a real small dealer.

You are right, actually it is $2000 OR 0% on a Dakota, I mistakenly was thinking the Durango. As for saving yourself in taxes...think about it.

If you pay 7% in taxes and the truck it $25000 you pay $1750 in sales tax. If you take the $2000 rebate then you are only paying $23000 and then you are paying $1610 in taxes, a savings of $140. No, I was not meaning the financing.

Drop me an email and I can help you. I work for DC and they have a program called Friends of DaimlerChrysler and I can save you all the hasseling. I can get you a control number that will allow you to buy a DC vehicle 1% below dealer cost. It does not effect your rebates or any other incentives. You still get those. The only thing it doesn't help is the value of the vehicle you are trading in, if you are trading in anything. That is between you and the dealer. Drop me an email at dakotart1@hotmail.com and I will give you all the details.

Read the whole site, even if it takes you a day or two. I paid $100 over invoice and custom ordered my truck. Ask to speak to the internet or fleet salesmen, skip the "regular" salescums. Also got the $2000 cash back and lower finanacing thru www.peoplefirst.com Once again skipping the dealer crap - just handed them a check and drove away. Easiest vehicle purchase I have every made :) Knowledge IS power!
