Well the dealership took only a 1 1/2 weeks to fix the paint on my hood, and me only a few days to let it chip some of it off. The dealer told me that the factory did damage to the hood, and that the factory repair shop did the paint 10 mil thick instead of 4 mil thick causing the cracking that I had. The cracks did not show up for 18 months, and I never had a chip on the hood. It looks like there is only a very thin layer on there now. OK, does anyone know what the factory paint job is supposed to be for a thickness?
Any answer is better then none.

You can stop by any good paint and body shop and they can measure the thickness of your paint.

Not to slam dodge, but I guess I will anyway, sorry. Dodge has had a tendancy to lay the paint on thin, very thin. You may notice this more so, when you look inside your bed. Typically there will be alot of missed spots. As far as thickness, that sounds like a crock o' sh!t. Take it back. Without looking at it I can only guess the cracking is your clear. Dodge also has had a problem with de-lamination, separation of the clear from the base. This was thanks to EPA reg.'s. I personally ould take it back, and if they have to, have 'em shot it all again. A collision shop will probably lay the paint on thicker than factory, meaning more than one coat. Good luck, and sounds like you may want to have 'em supply you with a free rental.

Rich, Factory thickness should be around 2.5 to 3.0 mil. First of all I can't believe that truck came with 10.0 mils from factory (approx. 3 or 4 times too much) even if it had been repaired there. If in fact it had that much paint when dealership worked on it it should have been stripped at that point. If it wasn't then your problem will never go away. You should ask dealership if they stripped it, if they didn't they should repair it correctly this time around. As far as the thin paint now that is chipping, it is hard to say what is the problem without actually seeing it! Hope this helps

The Body shop manager said that they stripped it so they could paint it. I tried to get them to give me a rental when I first took it in, but they said they do not provide for that and that their insurance does not allow for loaners. I am wondering if the chipped paint is from a pebble that hit the truck on the highway, I just do not remember hearing anything hitting the truck. Maybe I can at least get them to give me some free touch up paint as I do not think that they will repaint it. This is the chip itself,

and this is the hood

As we speak my truck in the body shop now getting a WHOLE NEW paint job because they didn't want to fix it the first, second or third time....and all it took was 3 months w/ messed up paint ALOT of calls to the dealership and to dodge, A DC rep and a DC paint rep to get it fixed. Just don't give yup and don't let up until you are satisfied.

Rich, By looking at your photo of the hood it looks like the paint is really flaky around edges indicating a de-lamination or adhession failure of top coat to the primer or sealer underneath. This could be caused by several things considering the painting process uses lots of different chemicals and products for different purposes. An easy way to check for adhesion failure is to slide a razor blade under edge of paint and slide it to see if paint is easily peeled away or possibly you could use 2" tape to apply directly to the flaky area with plenty of pressure then yank it off fast. Another possibility is just poor workmanship! Once again hard to tell what the problem is without actually seeing it. In any case the shop should be responsible for the crappy job on your truck. Hope this helps..

Wow, what a great site. I just bought my 02 Sport CC. A week later I was installing a bug guard. (Live in CO, rock chips are a given, especially in winter) When I was putting it on I noticed a paint chip in the hood. Of course I didn't notice if it had been there when I bought it, or it had occured while I was driving it. I talked to the salesperson who sold me the truck, she basically said I was on my own. If I wanted it fixed, they would have to re-work my financing!! I end-arounded that and went to the dealership's body shop. The Manager there told me that the Service Manager would have the finaly say on a re-shoot. he did give me a bottle of touch up though, so I took it to a detail shop nearby and they guy filled it and sealed the chip for $20. It looks okay, anyone else probably wouldn't see it, but I can. After reading these posts, I did notice the infamous "bubbles" or "sand under the paint" on one part of the hood that appears to be pretty common. Now again, the chip has been filled. But any thoughts on me taking the truck back and having them reshoot it anyway, based on the bubbles?? Sorry to be long-winded, had allot to say.

I have a 99 dakota. About 10 months ago I noticed the clearcoat on my hood was craking. Now the clear coat has totally flaked off in several spots on my hood. It has also done this on one of my bed rails. Which is no big deal. I'll just put a bed rail cap over it. I keep my truck in the garage so it's not like it's sits in the sun constantly. Th quality of the paint job on my truck is very poor. I also have a run, which is not very noticable on the side of my extended cab
