Subject: dif tires throw abs light?
IP: Logged

Message:
I've decided to put r/t rims on my 95 cc sport 2WD. I went today to price tires and the tire guy said if I put anything other than a 225 series on the 17x 9 rims I'll throw an abs light? does this guy know what he is talking about?
I read on here people putting 255 series on there rims. I am confused I don't want a real low profile tire. any tire suggestions would be welcome

thanks

I'd like to know how changing a tire is going to trigger your Anti-Lock Brake Error light... I think he's just full of it. Heck, I've got P255-65-R15s! I plan on getting some 17s when I can afford it... the 15s are just a bit small.

The 225 or 255 is just the width of the tire. The 225/255 is millimeters wide. I had 235's and went to 255's and my light never came on once. I am looking for a more low profile tire myself and want to go from a 65 to a 55. IWhen I was out looking and shopping, the tire guy told me that if I have on two different sizes, 235/55 up front, and 255/65 in rear for example, that my abs light would (or should) come on. For some reason I do not believe him. I think he was just trying to get me to buy four tires instead of two. Also...what about those people that get flats and have to drive on the space savers for a while...do their lights go off? Just my two cents worth dakdar.

The reason they say this is because they only know that your speed sensor connects through you ABS control module. I have not had a light come on but the MPH's are off and so is the trip mileage.

I purchased the Superlift recalibrator and I will be installing it this weekend. This connects and changes the original signal sent from the speed sensor on the rear tire to the ABS control module and the PCM. Now the tranny should shift and operate better and the MPH will be accurate. You can use this to swith from 2 different tire sizes.
It should work for smaller tires as it does for larger tires based on all the info I read.

Check out superlift.

After further reading you last post. He maybe right. Since you should have wheel speed sensors on all tires. If the signal is different from the front than the back you ABS controller may see this as an error and give you the code for a wheel sensor problem.
Atleast from looking at the wiring diagrams and further reading the service manual. But I do not know for sure just what I think he may be talking about.

I went to that tire sizing site and the wheels are going to end up being within one inch diameter of the stock tires I don't see what the big deal is does it have something to do with the greater weight or something?

The smaller the tire the more tire rotation you will have. Since you have a sensor on each wheel in front and 1 in the back. The three sensors will not be sending the same signal to the ABS controller also the PCM will receive a signal from the rear sensor. This is where I think they are saying your light may come on. If the front send a signal saying 45 MPH signal and the rear is sending a 47 MPH signal the ABS controller may say OOPS we got a problem turn on the ABS light. This is only my guess and until you try it or find someone else that is running 2 different tire sizes front to back I guess this is only speculation.

I was only trying to help you as to why the say the light will come on. It seems everyone thinks that since the sensor is connected to ABS controller once you mess with the output signal (tire size increase or decrease) the computer wont like it and the light comes on.

Just trying to help you understand what the truck is sensing front to back as far as tire rotation goes.

But I can't tell you for sure if you will have a problem.

thanks for the input forexfour. My truck only has rear wheel abs do i still have the sensors on the front. Also why would the front sensor recieve a different signal than from the rear with the same size rims and tires all around?

It is not the fact that you have ABS. It is the fact that you have three sensors all sending signals to the ABS Controller. This is where the problem could lie. If all around you have the same tires and rims you have no problem.

If you change the front to a smaller size and the rear 1" larger, since the sensors work on a speed based generated signal your front sensors will be sensing you are going faster than the back. So this will mean that the Front sensors are sending a stronger signal to th e ABS controller than the Back sensor. The back sensor also send a signal to the PCM which will make all of its calculations based on rear wheel speed, which will control the signal sent to the tranny to shift (if you have a auto tranny) as well as many other engine running components.

Yes you have 3 sensors on the 2 wheel drives 2 up front 1 on each wheel and the one on the rear located on the diff housing. The rear is the main sensor for engine running purposes but they all send a signal to the ABS controller and if the wheels are not all sending the same signal the maybe it will turn on your ABS light.

Are you just messin with me?

Still good info though! I think.

I keep saying that I am not sure that this will make the light go off but I am only saying that this is why I think that they are telling you this.
