How come some synthetics dont appear to be suitable for extended drain, like Mobil 1? Alot of mobil 1 users change oil at 3000 or 3500 miles.

I am wondering if anyone knows what the definition of "extended drain" means exactly? It used to be that auto manufacturers recommended 3000 mile drains, then 4000 mile drains and now some are recommending 7500 mile drains.

I assume that these increasing drain intervals from the manufacturers are not what they consider "extended drains", but they may have been before they implemented them.

I hear that in Europe, 20,000 mile drains are normal in some cars there -- is that extended drains? Any thoughts people? Thanks in advance.

Every car I have owned in the past 20 years has recommended 7500 mile drain intervals. An "extended drain" would be one BEYOND the recommended interval.

When Mobil1 first came out in 1976, they advertised once-a-year oil changes. I followed that recommendation for many-many years with NO engine problems whatsoever. When Mobil changed the original formula of MOBIL1 in the late 80s, I stopped using it. Mobil has once-again changed the formula (SuperSyn??) and is STILL charging the same per quart they did in the late 1970s.

Trust me... Mobil did not change the formula to LOOSE money! Is is now even cheeper to manufacture.

BTW... Only the folks that get payed to change oil recommend 3000 mile drains. Folks that KNOW engines and have held pistons, bearings and cams in their hands can tell you that the 7500 interval is just fine. 3000 mile oil changes is a waste of your time and money. It only fouls the envronment faster.

I am using the AMSOIL 0w-30 in almost every piece of equipment and every truck I own and I do follow their recommendations for oil change intervals and filter change intervals.
I know that the AMSOIL drain interval of 35,000 miles or one year sounds foolish and daring but let me tell you I have had nothing but excellant results with their products.
Why Mobil (or any other oil company) will not promote extended drains on their Synthetic Oil is no mystery (Greed and lesser quality).

Changing oil evey 3000 is wasting money? A whole 8 bucks? Unless you use synthetic as I do then its about 30. Its cheap insurance for me. When I drain it at 3000 its awful dirty.
