Subject: 2001 QC Brakes?

Hey all,

I have a 2001 quad cab 4x4 with front disk and rear drum brakes. I have been having a problem where my brakes seem to fade. If I really get on them the peddle just goes to the floor and I come to a stop slowly. No ABS kicks in, no nothing, just a slow stop. This happens about 1-3x a week. The rest of the time it works fine. I also have 32" All T's on it.

But man, I almost have creamed a couple of people. Any Ideas ??

I have 32" AT tires ,

How is your brake fluid?
When your brakes fade, is that after your first application or is it after several stops?

Brake fluid is new. Pad life is about 70% left.
It will just happen when I push them hard , like a panic stop. After it happens once they seem to be ok for a while.

You say the brake fluid is new. Was it changed, and why. There must be some air still in if you had it changed or got in when the pads were changed.

I've got a '01 QC but haven't had that problem yet. I get alot of squeeling from my front brakes when I tow my camper? I'm thinking/hopeing it's only from the dust?

I've got an 01 QC - the brakes aren't great, but they are consistant. You just have to be aware of what's going on around you. I am starting to get some rotor warping I think though.

I have 80,000 miles on my sport 4X4. The rotors have had to be turned about every 30,000 miles. I understand that the rotors are thinner than they could have been produced. I guess the Dodge enginers thought the truck was not going to be used for towing or mountain work.

I understand that there are aftermarket break rotors and pads that will cure the uneven breaking or peddle bump when the rotors become glazed because of heat. At least that what the dealers will tell you, the breaks glase because of heat. Well what did they expect when you work the truck breaks.

Had a very similar problem with my '02 Dak. Intermittent low pedal and poor braking. Checked all the usual things, couldn't find a cause. After a while, I could duplicate the problem in my driveway. With the motor running, stepping on the brake, releasing and braking again a few times would cause the pedal to drop noticeably lower. Finally got so bad I bumped a car in front of me in traffic one day. Took it to the dealer, they replaced the master cylinder under warranty (I had less than 25K at the time). Seems there's an issue with the master cylinders, the seals on the plunger/rod assembly inside were collapsing, so the rod was moving without pushing brake fluid. I heard of someone else who got in an accident due to the same or similar problem, and Daimler Chrysler supposedly paid the insurance claims due to equipment failure.

My truck has had the exact same problems for a while now. I took it to the dealer 2-3 times and they said they could not find anything wrong with it. What is weird is that I tested a few times and the brake pedal will go to the floor and the truck will come to a stop slowly, I take off again and barelly touch the brakes and the wheels try to lock up. Never seen anything like it before....
I have been looking for a bigger rotor kit, which means I'll probably have to replace the caliper as well. Anyone knows about available options?
Thanks.

Question for Christ- Did you put the 4.10 gears in your truck? I didn't think you could get them from the factory. Just curious. It must pull like a mule! Thanks in advance for any response
