i have a 96 cc with a 318 i want a cold air intake but when i read adds it will say adds 10 to 20 hp or somthing like that then i see a plane k&n filter it will say the same thing so if i put a cold air intake on with a k&n filter i could gain 20 to 40 hp right? i dont know that is just how it sounds to me
also i drive on a lot of dusty roads do they make a fome pre cleaner for a cone filter or would that defeat the purpous of the k&n filter

I like the AMSOIL Two-Stage oiled foam air filter,
it flows very well and traps and holds fine dust particles.

Cost for an AMSOIL TS-23 to fit your truck $21.50
Cost to clean and re-oil about 50 cents.

When talking about a 'cold air intake' and a 'K&N filter' the hp boosts aren't cumulative since the majority of the hp increase comes from the same component...

A K&N filter is the actual filter itself, whether it is a rectangular drop-in filter for the factory air intake, or a cone-shaped one used in 99.9% of the aftermarket air intakes.

Anytime you replace the plain ole paper filter with a better product that flows more air (whether it be K&N, S&B, oiled foam, etc.) you are going to see a horsepower increase.

The reasons behind getting an aftermarket air intake is that the factory air intake is somewhat restrictive in size and location. Aftermarket air intakes typically have larger tubes, air hats (when applicable), larger filter, and the upgraded appearance is a factor as well (when not buying the MacGyver special from Home Depot). But the primary gain from the aftermarket intake is using the alternative filter.

Here's a link to a variety of aftermarket air intakes for the Dodge Dakota/Durango:
