Does anyone know how to reset the "maint Req" setting on my 92 V8 Dakota. I know, I know, the dealers say that they are the only ones who can do it, federal law, etc., etc., but my truck passes IM, and I do all maintenance myself. My dealer said they want me to pay $56 for a IM test that they admit will fail because of the Maint Req light being on, then THEY will replace the O2 sensor & PCV valve and then reset the light at about $200.00 plus labor. Sounds like a sham to me! How about it, anybody have the knowledge out there?

Take it to Autozone, get them to use their diag machine. Tell them you want to clear whatever PCM codes popup.

No more Maint Req light

It's Free!

My old ranger had the "check engine" light on. The light ate away at my being. Duct tape wethered on the dash, sunglasses dulled only my memories. Ranger in pieces, little light meets a sudden and unexpected end. Take my advice stay away from Joy.

The Autozone idea is a good one, but there aren't any Autozones in Fairbanks Alaska. Maybe Schucks?

Oh yeah, the nearest other Dodge dealer/servicer is 350 miles away in Anchorage although I'm tempted to go there. I forgot to mention that the dealer told me that THEY were the only ones who could reset the light (Damn near laughingly as I stormed out).

This light is a ploy to get you to take the truck to the dealer. Unlike the ck engine light, this light comes on from time, not a code. Unplug the module attached to the mtc required light. It looks like a relay usually blue in color and is located near the steering wheel, just unplug no more mtc light. .

Thanks 88dak,
I'll do that. I only hope that takes care of the problem. I think that on the diagnostic computer at the I/M station it still may show up, and that's where the real problem lies. Maint Req = no pass I/M. I'll let you know.

that maintenance required light will come on about every 60k. it is there to make sure the emissions required work gets done. find out what that is and do it your self before you take it in.
ANY shop that has a decent diagnostic scanner can reset that light

The required maintenance is replacing the O2 sensor and PCV valve which I will do. Part of the problem with my dealer is that they told me that they had to replace the parts to legally reset the light even if I had already done it. By the way, the truck has 72k miles.

P.S.
Try pulling the neg> battery cably off and turnig the key all the way to the start position and hold it there for 45 sec. it will wipe out any pcm codes . promise! I've done it several times when fooling with the exhst and o2'sensors.and it worked.

I've tried the neg cable and 15 second crank, that didn't do it so I'll try the 45 second crank. If not I guess I'll be buying a obd-II diag scanner.
nuckinfuts, did you have a Maint Req light on ever before you did that?
