God this looks bad! I went to Spitzer.com (spitzer dodge website) and went to theire build a vehicle section. I tried to build an '03 R/T and they don't have the 5.9 listed as an option. So I went back to the 02's....the 5.9 is an option!!! I then went back to the 03's and looked at all the options you could get.....they now have....leather....4wheel antilock..rear only....and 4 wheel anti lock for all 4 wheels.... Does Spitzer Dodge know something we don't???? I am so upset....I was so wanting to order a 2003 R/T. Doesn't look like there is gonna be one.....sniff sniff sniff......:(

I've heard from a couple of people who work for Daimler-Chrysler that you can still order a 2003 R/T. There is no difference between 2002-2003. Dodge and most other websites are just horrible about listing the R/T option.

If it were true, I really wouldn't worry about it.

First of all, the 5.9 is a substantially bigger & thirstier motor for just a tiny bit more stock torque and 'power'. For more power or to'q, just climb higher up the curve & rev the 4.7 a bit higher, and/or get a 3.92 back end. Use lower gears if you have to - the gearbox is there for a reason. Learn how to use a 5-speed. It can be done (Last year I pulled a 3000 lb trailer w/ electric brakes from Florida to Calif & back behind a 4-cylinder DOHC 1.8 liter car (mildly customized motor, usually going full throttle), and had no serious problems; even going thru the pass between LA and Vegas). A 4.7 in the Dak is a pretty good motor and if shifting down a gear or even two from time to time isn't enough, you'll need something with a V10 or turbo-diesel in it anyways. A 5.9 won't help that much. (Around here, almost everyone runs 3/4-tons with a Cummins TD, or Ford duallie 1-tons with 7.3l diesels. Once in a while you see a V10. -These are all daily drivers. There are relatively few Daks so far but more show up every day).

Second, having to build, stock, distribute, and tool for assembly for an additional engine adds a huge expense to DCs manufacturing costs. That is something that has to be spread over all Daks, not just the 5.9, even when it is offered as an extra cost option. Making all Daks several hundred dollars more expensive than they otherwise would be, or even having to use cheap parts to build the truck to keep the price down, is a bad idea. I'd be a lot happier to see a stock 4.7 coming off the line with Moog ball-joints and a good timing chain and 90% fewer TSB's, instead of getting a junky truck just so a 5.9 could be available.

Third, IMHO, if you have a very special use for the truck such as a lot of bracket racing where you want a heavily-modified 5.9, then you should be going mostly aftermarket anyways or chopping old trucks for engines or even exploring how to get higher power/torque out of a motor with the 4.7's curves. I'm no ricer fan, but you have to admit that customized small car motors have come a really long way in the last few years. I believe some of these lessons can be applied to the SOHC 4.7 engine.

Let the flames begin. :)

From what i have herd form myfather in law, who works for D/C, the 5.9s are nolonger available on the web, you have to contact D/C directly. the 5.9 has been discontenued. in lieu of the 5.7 Hemi in the 04 model year. the 5.7 should become the next R/T.

I just tried that websight and the R/T is right there... it says $21,295 base MSRP on a 2003 RC R/T. There are really very few changes for the 2003 Dakotas. I would just crap if they put the 5.7 in the 2004. It is possible but without the redesign I don't think it's likely. There will be no redesign ready as soon as 2004 so I doubt the 5.7 will be put in there. Personally I don't know how the Dakota could get any better looking from a redesign so I would absoultely love to see the 5.7 in the current body. Hell, I'm temped to go buy a new Ram to get the motor but want to see what they are like first, probably no better power to weight then the Dakota R/T but much more expensive.
