Ok, I guess I have a 2 part question. I noticed about a month ago that the antifreeze was a little low, Not really very much at all but since I was leaving for the beach and I had a long trip ahead I thought it would be a good idea to add a little. Well if anyone has ever did this and knows where the overflow comes out it makes a mess. After you get up to temp and it overflows it just spews out under the hood because theres no hose out of the engin compartment. So after a couple of weeks after everything getting soaked in antifreeze I made my own hose to keep all that anitfreeze out of the engine bay. I ran a 5/8 hose to the ground instead of it spewing out of the overflow directly under the hood. Well I would think that by now all the extra would have been boiled out.
It never really has run hot always below 210 or right on but the last couple of weeks every now and then it will get a tad above 210. No really big deal but I'm just sick of smelling that damn antifreeze all the time. And also the level has always been full when I've checked it cold and hot so thats why I thought it could possibly be the thermostat. But it has been in the upper 90's the last couple of weeks and that is what has got me undecided about whether or not it's the thermostat or just the heat. Theres no antifreeze int the oil, I changed it Sunday and have checked it since then and none so I'm at a loss. Should I just go ahead and drain it and refill if it's not the thermostat, and if it is the thermostat where is it on a 4.7???????

Jeff,

Yo ask alot of questions, it's cool though, so do I some time.

I've put the 180 T-stat in my 4.7. I got lots of good advice from people on this very board before doing it. I suggest a search on this site for a more detailed list, but here's the basics:
-The t-stat is at the lower, passenger side radiator hose, in a plastic housing on the front of the engine block.
-pop off the lower plastic shroud cover, I used screwdrivers, butter knives would work well also.
-just put a pan under there and loosen the housing, it's 8mm bolts. Don't have to drain the whole system.
-put in new t-stat, pointy end out away from block, Robert Shaw #GT755-180.
-bolt back on, don't overtighten, refill rad, check for leaks, shroud back on

I've never had the overflow probs you're talking about. I'm in Houston/Galveston Texas, HOT, and I don't even have my belt fan on anymore, only the stock electric, and it never runs hot.

Good luck

Thanks alot Todd, Im think I do need the thermostat but I believe that the overflow problem I have is that I just have it overfilled
because I checked the dipstick this evening and it's WAY above the full line. So I'll probably get a new thermostat and drain the whole system anyway and refill so I don't have to smell antifreeze anymore.*L* And I'll never add extra when its low again either. I probably added twice as much as it needed, My goof but you learn things like that sometimes I guess. So hopefully everybody else will see this too and not want to overfill their system either.

Check inside the overflow bottle. When you open the cover you should have this funny looking thing in there to pull out in order to look inside. It has holes in the bottom of it to check the level of the overflow bottle.

Its Robertshaw, not Robert Shaw. If you do a search on Robert Shaw, you get an air conditioning manufacturer and car parts dealers look at you funny when you ask for it by name.
