Found this on the internet and thought it may interest some of you.

Some new cars will come out for Dodge in 2004, as well as a new truck and dropping another truck.

That truck that will be dropped will be the Dakota. To make a long story short, people wanted the next-generation Durango (code-named HB) to have more interior room, so the new platform was stretched. But while that was good news for the Durango, that was bad news for the Dakota. The next-generation Dakota (code-named NB) was then just slightly smaller than the new 2002 Ram 1/2 ton, so the Dakota will be dropped in 2004, mainly because it would be so close that it would compete with the Ram 1500. A new compact pickup that's based on this year's M80 concept (right, might actually be the M80) will be a replacement for the mid-size Dakota, but it won't come out until 2005.

I've seen that a couple times, but it's hard to think they'd drop the Dakota. On my street it's the most common vehicle -- which I never noticed 'till a few weeks ago.

I think they might be talking about the Sidewinder thing, which I've heard called the Dodge Dakota Sidewinder too.

That M80 thing is so freakin' ugly. Personally I love the PowerWagon and ChargerR/T concepts the most. Those are both just very cool looking vehicles.

It wouldn't be the first time a manufacture made a stupid mistake. And dropping the Dakota line would be a very big one. I see new Dakotas everywhere. And they have a fallowing.

They are not going to stop production of
the dakota. It sounds like you got that
off of car-truck. They are actually going to continue producing both the dakota and durango.
The wheelbase will be slightly longer, but not the overall sheetmetal, to give both badges a little more interior room. And the 5.7 will
make its debut in the heavy duty ram, then it will begin to appear in the redesigned dakota that will replace the dakota R/T. Do you honestly think they would stop making one of their hottest selling items. I know the germans changed some things, but I don't think they are as silly to do away with the dakota. Do you?

Hmmm...you never know. Look at what they did with their cash-cow XJ/Cherokee. Sales were still hot, they owned the tooling and the assy. lines--pure profit. Replaced it will the KJ/Liberty. Go figure.

I can't see them losing the dakota because thats the same time chevrolet has slated for their new midsize pick-up. It will be a direct competitor for the dak!

The Quad cab is a huge success. They may have made those plans prior to its release.

I'd say that is the information (old, since revised) from car-truck. No where does it say they are dropping the Dakota just the redesign that they were working on. Basically the Durango will go forward with that redesign and the Dakota will get something different. It's actuall good news, the Dakota will stick to what it does best being a true midsize truck with full size power rather then just another full size pickup. The M-80 is going to be its own new platform, it's replacing the rebadged Mitsu (Dodge D-80s?) compact pickup they used to sell. So Dodge will have a compact, mid, and full size pickup again.

What better way to get "FREE" advertising than to announce plans to stop production of a very popular vehicle.

I'm NOT stupid!

I was speaking with a Dodge Tech while we
were both waiting for exhaust work to be done
at a shop thats around the corner from my
local dealership. I was telling him how much I
love my truck and he told me that they were
going to be discontinuing it. He said that it
had to do with the changing emmissions laws
and that you can only produce so many
vehicles in each emmissions range. it's all
hearsay, but when even the techs are saying
it, you have to wonder...
