i have a story some of you may be interested in hearing:

last saturday night i come home about 1:30. i pull in the drive and cut of my dak, grab my cell and slam the door - with the keys still in the ignition! and both doors locked! now, you say, allright, just get your spare key. but therin laid the problem, for the spare key was back in tuscaloosa, in my apt. (i was home for the weekend). well, i haven't had my truck but for about 2 months and had yet to make any extra keys, so here i was, 150 miles from my extra key, with the keys to my apt. (to get that extra key) locked inside my dak. and its 1:45 am by now. i have unlocked door before with a coat hanger slipped between the window and weatherstripping, so i tried this. nothing doing. i have yet to examine the inside of the doors, but it seems like there is a metal plate seperating the locking parts from the outside of the door, and i finally gave up on this idea. i don't have the rear sliding window, so i decided to try to open the back windows on the ext. cab part of the truck, and after much effort and being extremely careful to not scratch the truck, i got it done, and eventually got the door open with the help of a really long stick at about 4 am.

so boys and girls, what's the point here? first off, i'm a dumba$$ - for several reasons: doing this in the first place, and not having extra copies of my keys. needless to say, i got extra copies made the very next day. three in fact. so now i'm prepared...i hope. secondly, if you lock your keys in your dak, there is hope! if you can find a good coathanger, anyway!

maybe one of you can benefit from my stupidity, and GET THOSE EXTRA KEYS MADE! and don't keep them in an another town! life's little lessons...

so, on a side note - has anyone who has taken off the door panels for speaker/window work seen just how the locking mechanisms are seperated from the outside of the door? just curious. i don't want to perform surgery on my truck just to satisfy my engineering-bred curiosity, but if i must, i suppose i could.

I have a spare key to my truck in my wallet. And since I never go anywhere without my wallet, I never am without a spare key.

You learn valuable lessons the first time you lock yourself out of your vehicle....

When I leave my keys in my truck on the jobsite, I always leave the key all the way in. This way the front door will never lock. I have pwr windows and locks and the factory sec. system. I never lock my keys in this way.

Your roadside assistance could have brought
a key to you, at no charge, and you could have
spent that time drinking instead of sweating it
in the driveway.
You just saved Dodge a little bit of money I
suppose.

I don't know if I should say this but Dakotas specially every since they changed the design, are the easiest vehicles to open. Here where I live (close to the border with mexico), are the highest rates of stolen vehicles 80% of them being dakotas.I also know by experience don't ask!. I can tell you the mechanics of it and how to easily open it with a clothes hanger but not on this forum. It would be unsecure for all of us who has them. But if you are really interested, e-mail me to fred_guti@hotmail.com. just my two cents!!

I recently had to replace my power lock assembly (whatever you call it) on my 2000. IMO it would be very difficult to get the door unlocked using a slim jim, let alone a coat hanger unless you were really good. The area where the linkage comes together is very tight and you'd have to hit it just perfect. Not to say it can't be done, but if I locked my key's in... I'd head to the back window first.

Just my 3.28 cents.

I guess I got lucky when I locked mine inside. A coat hanger and the older style power locks with the toggle switch sticking out from the door were my olny weapons to get in.

Managed to get the hanger in through the top of the door, only tore my weather stipping about 2" and was able to get the hanger-hook under the toggle and pull it up then unlocking all the doors in my truck.

Now I know I can break into any 2000 Dakota with power locks if I ever decide to change careers and start a Dakota chop shop.

graphite - too bad i don't have the power lock system to take adavntage of that feature. my mom's old '98 durango did that, and it was a very nice feature.

teamfast - i guess i need to write that roadside number down and stick it in my wallet eh? i probably can find it in the manuals somewhere i'm sure. do you know how long that lasts? my truck has the 7 yr/100,000mile powertrain warranty, so does the roadside assistance run the gammut with that warranty, or what? or do you know?

tim - back window is the way to go!

izzy - that sux that you tore the weather stripping, but good that you got in without having to call a locksmith.

I never use the key on the door and always use the remote for my alarm system, so I have to have my keys in hand to lock the truck. But thats just one way to get around locking your keys in right?
