I may be wrong but I don't think you can use either one in a Mopar auto transmission.
I love the saying about guns, flies, & garbage. ;-)

For Mopar automatic transmissions, must be ATF +3 or +4, Type 7176.

It calls for Dex 2 in the manual so I have to think thats ok. I just want to be sure about the D3.

I've never heard of a Dak taking Dexron III, yes dexron 3 will work, it is better than dex 2, it' been updated. check with you dealer before you do anything. most daks take ATF +3 as previously mentioned. I'm not sure the effects of unsing Dex 3 in a mopar tranny, don't recomned you finding out untill you positive that's what it takes

dex 2 is being fazed out, if it is not already gone in your area like mine. dex 3 is perfectly fine, but I would recommend Havoline chrysler 7176

I'd use what your owners manual calls for. They put the wrong transmission fluid in my Eagle some time ago and it shifted tearably till I had the fluid changed. I haven't looked what my Dak takes yet. For the transmission, I take it to the Dealer and have it changed by the book. My Eagle is every 15,000 miles. Fluid change is cheap compaired to rebuilt tranny.

This is bad news and a common failure mode for DC auto trannys. Use ONLY what is specified. The friction charactoristics of the DEXTRON fluids is different and causes the internal clutches to slip. The computer-controled trannys even sense the slippage and try to compensate causing all kinds of strange problems.

My Daks never had anything but Dex 3 for 9 years without any probs. and its highly abused. Id list all my mods but dont feel like typing that much, but trust me, Dex 3 is good stuff.

You are correct. It is Dexron, a GM trademark. I would use what the manual calls for. Some older Dakota's said in the owners manual that Dexron was OK, but anything newer calls specifically for Mopar Type 7176. I highly recommend the Mopar tranny fluid. The exception would be in the transfer case, in which it is fine to use Dexron.

Try giving a couple of dealers a call and I will bet you they say to use ATF+3. Dexron is NO Longer recommended for Chrysler trannies. ATF+3 is what you must use.

You can buy ATF+3 at almost all parts stores, "DC dealer will have it or ATF+4" and and at Wal-Mart. Wal-Mart has multiple brands of ATF+III and so does AutoZone. So their realy is no reason not to use the right thing. I am currently useing Redlines version of ATF+4 in my trany and Amsoil universal in my power steering and my T/Case.

First of all, its DEXRON, not DEXTRON. Get it right!
Second, it does not belong in a modern mopar tranny. Use ATF +3 or +4 as your manual calls for.

I have a 97 dodge ram full size 4wd.
I just had a transmission rebuilt by a Mr. Transmission shop. As I watched them start to put Dexron into my truck, I questioned that and even pointed to my manual. The reply was that they were compatable and that it is what they put in all of the chryslers. BEWARE!

Now I am learning and I am going to try to get them to pay for flushing and replacing the fluid with proper spec fluid.

What do you think?

I've been researching this for my Fiance's Sebring. I've noticed that even Mobile 1's ATF, which meets
Dextron III requirements, but has a note at the bottom:
* Not recommended for Chrysler Type 7176 ATF.

The AMSOIL Synthetic ATF does meet the Chrysler Spec. So it appears its going to be either AMSOIL, or DC ATF+3(or 4) for the old Sebring.

What is the difference between dex II and dex III? I had my tranny repared (95 pontiac trans sport se 3.8l) and wached the repareman poor dex II but the manual says to use dex III. The repareman said that there is no difference, but my van slips to neutral somtimes when I floor it to pass a car when driveing under 30 mph. Could this be because of the dex II fluid?
