Subject: 5 speed tranny- what type of fluid?
IP: Logged

Message:
Guys I did a search, however I did not find anything about what type of fluid to use in the 5 speed trannys we have.

The truck is a '97 Dakota 5 speed with the 2.5L engine.

Also what kind of tranny is this? The AX15 (or something like that) or is it the NV?

Thank you for any help.

-John

The dealer told me to use 75w90 gear lube- and I swear I have heard that this is not correct.

The NV3500 says to use Mopar fluid- and the AX15 (or whatever it is) says use the 75w90 gear lube-

that info is straight from the '97 Dakota repair manual (the dealer looked these up for me).

I just dont seem to think gar oil is correct in these trannys because, again, I swear I found a post a long time ago saying that the gear lube is bad for these.

Anyone? Thanks.

The NV 3500 uses 2 quarts of a special fluid only. Can be bought at your dealer. However, they say you never have to change the fluid in a nv-3500

The best gear lube for that transmission is the series 2000 75w-90 gear oil from AMSOIL.
Contact the AMSOIL Sponsor here for more info.

Just make sure you have the AX-15 and not the Getrag G-360 or the NV-3500 because both of those use synthetic motor oil.

I used Redline MTL in my '99 AX-15 transmission and it works great. You can get it from Summit Racing or Jeg's.

75w-90 is correct.

A lot of people ask: 75w-90 or 75w-140 ? Personally I would use the synthetic 75w-90 since synthetic 75w-90 will perform above and beyond the recommended petroleum 75w-90.

I have Freightliner customers driving Class 8 Tractor Trailor Trucks using 75w-90 synthetic gear lube in their difs. Tuff enough for them ... Tuff enough for me.
