Subject: Can a 4x4 Dak be used to drag???
IP: Logged

Message:
I am just wondering. I replaced my 98 modded Camaro with a 02 LE and got the mod bug again so I was wondering if it is possible to setup a Dak 4x4 for drag racing? Please excuse my ignorance but I have not been a 4x4 guy and don't know. If so, what would you have to do, change the transfer case, gears, differencial? Also, if anyone is doing this, how fast can you make the run in the 1/8th or 1/4? Thanks. Tim 98 Dak

Sure it can be made to drag...If people can drag a friggin Honda Civic DE, then you can drag with your 4x4. What engine do you have? You would prolly have to lower it some (if possible).

Not too sure but I think the reason people don't is cause the transfer case would have a hard time holdin together at high rpm.

Two of the quickest trucks ever produced were 4WD...The GMC Typhoon and Cyclone. The fact that thaey were all wheel drive is what made them so quick...no wheel spin!
Now I no these weren`t "real 4X4s" , but they did have transfer cases and lots of power , just no low range capabilites on the t/case.
I also have an `02 QC AWD with the 4.7 and am saving my pennies for the KB supercharger!

The problem with a 4x4 are weight disadvantage and drag! It can be done but you will always be at a disadvantage. You would be better off to get another vechile just for building into a fast car or two wheel drive truck.

I have raced mine. Just ran it in two wheel drive. not he fastest truck but doid alright.
Never tried running in 4 wheel drive but don't think there would be a problem till you tried to turn off but could always just disegage it before turn off while slowing down. I race mine with factory 3.9 gears and transfer case. My best time is 16.5 at 80 mph. Hope you have fun.

Run it in 2WD mode. I would suggest using in in 4WD. Dodge didn't engineer these 4x4s for racing. They recommend not running in 4HI at all even at regular highway speeds on dry pavement. Like Scott said, the GMC was a different kind of 4WD, my guess more like AWD instead of true 4x4 (axles synched).

Well, good question. Now for a short story. There used to be these 2 guys in my hometown that had an old 4wd '72 GMC Suburban with a 350 under the hood. We'll call them Steve and Mike. Steve had a turbo 350 with a transfer case both rebuilt by Tom Shinholster (ex NHRA mech. of some kind). Steve used to take this Suburban out to Orange COunty Speedway here on the outer edge of Orlando each year for the Street Nationals sponsored by a local radio station. Anyone could take any street legal car out and race it to try and win. Steve would pull this 'buban out on the line with Mike in the copilot seat, drop it in 4low with the front hubs locked and as soon as the lights did their thing he would lay into it. After making it though all the gears in 4low, he'd throw it in nuetral and Mike would yank the transfer case out of low gear and Steve would put the transmission back into gear and lay into it again. Never seemed to phase the power train the least bit. Granted he was only pulling something like 20 sec 1/4's in this huge beast but it was neat to watch......so was the 454 Vega that lept off the line, bounced 4 or 5 times as the torque ran it off the right side of the track and into the guard rail.

It is true that most of the vechiles that run Pikes Peak are AWD or 4WD. The vechiles that run pikes Peak are designed to run at 120+mph around tight curves on unpaved roads. The sus. setup is nothing like OEM! Toyotas 1.8L Turbo charged celica is makeing better then 500HP and weights about as much as a YUGO. Ivan the Iron man Stewart does not run pikes peak. His 3.0 V6 was makeing 500-800HP and his new 4.7 V8 is makeing about the same HP but alot more torque. His baja truck has more then 25 inchs of axle articulation I think it is somewhere around 36 inchs. His engine is prepped by PPI and cost over $50,000. It is realy silly to compare our trucks to these highly specilized vechiles. Ivan the Ironman uses a 4wd Tacoma to pre run some sections of the course in a scout like fashion. The reason for the varrying power output on his engines is due to different events. In a stadium truck lots of torque and a broad power band are important and the power band must be much lower then in a dessert baja truck.
